Last night was the 183rd Commencement of Xavier High School in New York City honoring the Class of 2026. Since we coach 13 of the graduates on the hockey team, Coach Al and myself went to the ceremony. I got photos with 12 of the 13 (Billy Keyworth where are you? - couldn’t find him). Of course, they have their cigar tradition - It was hard to breathe. It was brutally hot yesterday - the walk from the 33rd St. PATH station to St. Patrick’s Cathedral was very hot - luckily the cathedral was cooler. The walk back was much better.

If you look at the photos inside the church - I included the new murals that have been added to the back. The massive 25-foot-tall mural in its entryway is titled “What’s So Funny About Peace, Love, and Understanding.” It was commissioned by Brooklyn-based artist Adam Cvijanovic. It connects the waves of 19th-century Irish immigrants who helped build the church to contemporary refugees and newcomers of all backgrounds. The artwork features prominent figures of the American Catholic story who dedicated themselves to immigrants and the poor, including Mother Frances Cabrini, Dorothy Day, Venerable Pierre Toussaint and Archbishop John Hughes. One of the panels is a tribute to New York City first responders.
