Antarctica Story – Part 4

So me and Stewart jumped on a plane in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina and started making our way toward Ushuaia, Argentina—the southernmost city in the world.

After what felt like 45 flights to get there, we finally arrived and had a couple days to explore before taking on the Drake Passage… known as one of the roughest stretches of ocean on Earth.

The first night we met a few people who would be joining us on the trip. By the second night, that turned into a group of 10 or 12 people all about to step onto a boat together and head toward Antarctica. This would also be the first time being able to see our ship as well as my first encounter with the great @paulstamets

At that point, it still didn’t fully feel real.

I’ve always wanted to go to Burning Man, but for years it hadn’t aligned. That’s why, when it all came into place for me to attend this year it felt it all came into place. And you know what’s WILD?!

Of course for my first year the Man would be surrounded by BEES and honeycombs and the year’s theme would be animal theme!!

So, you’re meant to tell me that I’d be surrounded by bee energy AND get to dress up as a kitty the whole time?!

I was a smitten kitten to say nonetheless!! 😻🐝🌅🏜️

It was a wild first year’s experience, but something that I’d say everytime someone asked me how I was holding up for my first time ~given the environmental conditions ~

I’d give an authentic answer from my heart… I felt I was living in the present. I had nothing else to compare it to and I felt as though I was just living each day’s experience and taking it for what it was. I felt so present in the experience.

My highlight from my time on playa was the people. I felt I really got to sink into the culture and the heart of the community. It was beautiful to see everyone rally, look out and take care of one another, and slow everything down.

Hugging, supporting, and loving one another is what it’s all about.

I’m also walking away with huge gratitude for the cultural conversation that we’re having surrounding the ecological and environmental impacts surrounding climate change. I think it’s modeling a radical conversation around the importance of climate change and the community is aiding to mobilize the significance of climate intervention.

The bees are a super organism. Not one bee can survive on its own (well, not if it’s a solidarity bee) but, when we’re talking about the honeybee~ they thrive in community~

And that’s EXACTLY what we did. We embodied the way of the bee and tapped into the hive mind 🐝🧠😻

I’m definitely still regrouping from having been in lockdown and staying a tad bit later than I anticipated, but it’s with the love and compassion of the community that we all got through it together.

Ryan and I got arrested
in front of the White House
to stop the Keystone XL Pipeline.

And yesterday Biden has signed an executive order to CANCEL THE KXL Pipeline! along with orders to
1. Re-enter the Paris agreement in 30 days
2. Reverse the rollbacks to vehicle emissions standards
3. Undo decisions to slash the size of several national monuments
4. Enforce a temporary moratorium on oil and natural gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; and
5. Re-establish a working group on the social costs of greenhouse gasses.

So much to celebrate.
