13 years ago today, Charli xcx released “SuperLove,” a single that feels a bit forgotten now, dropped somewhere between the True Romance and Sucker eras.

Charli said she started writing it during the same week as “I Love It,” left it sitting around for a while, then came back to it because she still loved the chorus. An early version apparently leaned much more towards straightforward pop, almost Katy Perry territory, before she and Patrik Berger — THE producer behind “Dancing on My Own” — pushed it somewhere rougher and weirder.

At the time, “SuperLove” was supposed to be the first single from Charli’s second album. That version of the record never really happened, though. By the time Sucker came together, she felt the song was already too old and left it off completely, which probably explains why “SuperLove” ended up becoming such an odd little footnote in her discography.

Charli had never been to Japan before, but immediately knew she wanted to shoot the video there. She landed at around 4am and was apparently filming by 6.

The bikers in the video were actual bōsōzoku riders, not actors, and the production managed to gather a whole group of them under Yokohama Bay Bridge. Police eventually showed up and everyone started scattering while Charli was still sitting on the back of one of the bikes. The rider started taking off with her, so director Ryan Andrews had to run after them, yelling for him to stop.

They also filmed inside Tokyo’s real Robot Restaurant, back when very few international productions had been allowed to shoot there, which explains why the clip feels less like a constructed pop video and more like Charli being dropped into complete sensory overload for two days.
