The Radicalisation of Mrs Mary Lim-Rodrigues was… a lot.

And yes, it really did take me about a week to write this, because there was so much I needed to process.

My first reaction was that I didn't quite know how I felt about the show.

The message landed, that's for sure.

I left the theatre that night uncomfortable, feeling the weight of what I had just watched and sitting with the difficult questions the show had planted.

And it is an important conversation to have.

In our respective professional roles, amidst the SOPs, responsibilities and boundaries that tell us what we should and should not do, how do we continue being human?

But I also left wondering how I was responding to this form of storytelling.

The show relied heavily on narration, and I never really felt like it was building towards a climax. There was relatively little conversation between characters on stage, and in the moment, that distance affected how engaged I felt with the story.

Except I couldn't quite leave it there.

There was this nagging feeling that there was something else happening that I hadn't managed to put my finger on.

So I sat with it.

For a show whose script had gone through so many iterations, whose costumes seemed so intentional in placing everyone in shades of grey and white except one, and whose lighting design created some of the most striking images of the night, I couldn't shake the feeling that there were choices I hadn't quite reached yet.

A week later, here's where I am.

I still don't think the narration necessarily worked for me as a way of keeping me engaged in the moment.

But I'm beginning to wonder whether the distance it created was also part of what made it interesting.

Because thinking back, there was something almost sterile about the way the story was narrated.

Measured. Controlled. Procedural.

And increasingly, I find myself thinking about those narrators as almost representative of the system itself.

A system with clearly defined SOPs. Processes. Professional boundaries. Things that should be done. Things that should not be said.

And within this cold, clinical structure were a teacher and her student.
