How to do Round Top right according to the pros! ⤵️

We spent the weekend exploring Round Top with Ted and Donna of @periodmodern, and as Round Top rookies ourselves, getting to experience even a small slice of the world’s largest antique fair through the eyes of two seasoned veterans was such a treat!

If you’ve ever been to Round Top, you know there’s simply no way to see it all. So we asked Ted and Donna to share a few tips for making the most of your trip, plus some of their favorite places to shop, eat, drink and explore.

A few things to know before you go:

✳️ Have a plan, but leave room to wander. Pick a handful of must-visit vendors or venues, then give yourself plenty of time to explore. Half the fun is stumbling upon something you never knew you were looking for!

✳️ Set a budget (with a little wiggle room). Know what you’re shopping for and what you’re comfortable spending, but leave room for that one piece you absolutely don’t need but can’t imagine leaving behind.

✳️ Don’t overthink it! If you love something, chances are someone else does too. There’s usually another buyer right behind you, and waiting until later might mean missing out. We almost learned this one the hard way!

Where to shop & explore 🛍️

📍 @excessfield (where you’ll find Period Modern!)
📍 The Fields at Warrenton
📍 @thecompound_roundtop
📍 @baderranchatroundtop
📍 @markethillroundtop
📍 @bluehillsatroundtop (open October 17-31)
📍 @marburgerfarm (open October 27-31)
📍 @zapphall

Where to eat, drink & take a break 🍸

🌿 @thegardencompany
🍺 @roundtopbrewing
🥂 @lapetitedameroundtop
🍷 Cin Cin at @baderranchatroundtop
🥧 @royersroundtopcafe
☕ @millstreetcafe.rt

And don’t overlook all the restaurants, food trucks and pop-ups tucked into the shopping venues themselves. There’s no shortage of good places to refuel between treasure hunts!

Save this for your next Round Top adventure, and tell us what spots we need to add to our list!

@missysprovisions is finally open and she real cute! ⤵️

This mother-daughter bakery specializes in true artisan pastries and long-fermented breads made with local Texas flour, and you can absolutely taste the love that goes into it all. The space is adorable and feels like it’s been a fixture of the neighborhood for years even though they just opened. Put ‘em on your list to try!

When your work is all about the details, it only makes sense to photograph you in the place where those details first start coming together!

We shot Armando, Gabriel, and the Juárez & Juárez team with Michael right inside their Monte Vista office, surrounded by the drawings, plans, materials, books, and inspiration that go into creating some seriously beautiful homes.

Juárez & Juárez has been designing in San Antonio since 2007, with an approach rooted in classical and traditional architecture but never about simply recreating the past. Their work spans architecture, interiors, and gardens, allowing them to think about a home as a whole and create something that feels specific to the people who will actually live there.

And in a design world where trends can come and go pretty quickly, we love that their work is really about the opposite. Proportion, craftsmanship, thoughtful details, and homes that feel like they could have always been there and will still feel beautiful decades from now.

Last year, we showed you where Art of Cellaring members like to hang out. This year, we wanted to show you where they get the good stuff.

We shot @joshthomaswine with Michael inside the AOC bottle shop because, at its core, this place is really the ultimate bottle shop with benefits.

Yes, there’s the members-only lounge, private wine storage, tastings, events, and a whole community built around loving and learning about wine. There’s even the @txwineschool, where you can take that learning a whole lot further. But you don’t have to be a member or a serious wine collector to walk in and shop their incredible selection of bottles. Josh and his team have created a seriously good, highly curated wine shop where they can help you find everything from something easy to open on a Tuesday night to a bottle you’ve been hunting down for years.

So this year we had fun putting Josh right in the middle of the bottles and showing off another side of AOC. And because no Scout Guide shoot is complete without someone trying to steal Michael’s attention, Josh’s dog Chenin made sure she got her moment too 🙂‍↕️

If you’re going to celebrate 80 years, you might as well dress for the occasion! We shot the Kowalski family with Michael inside the casino at @theredberryestate, and from the beginning, we wanted this one to feel like a celebration. Greg and Bekki, Travis and Jamie, and Jennifer and Todd all dressed to the nines, surrounded by one of the incredible spaces that is now such a big part of The RK Group’s story.

What started with Rosemary and Hank Kowalski and a little barbecue restaurant in San Antonio in 1946 has grown into one of the city’s most incredible family business stories. Through HemisFair ’68, countless weddings and galas, major conventions, visits from presidents, royalty and even a pope, The RK Group has quite literally helped San Antonio celebrate for generations.

Today, that legacy continues with Greg and the next generation of the Kowalski family, and we loved getting all of them together for a photo that felt a little glamorous, a little playful, and very fitting for this milestone year.

After 80 years of being behind so many of San Antonio’s biggest moments, we figured it was only right to put the Kowalski family in front of the camera for one of their own!!

Herb’s Hat Shop has been a San Antonio institution for 50 years, but the last decade has brought a pretty exciting new chapter to its story.

Bryan and Kay took over Herb’s 10 years ago, stepping into a business with decades of history behind it and finding ways to grow the brand while still honoring everything that made people love Herb’s in the first place. That growth has included expanding beyond San Antonio, which is how we found ourselves on the historic Blanco square for this shoot.

We headed out with Alejandro to photograph Bryan, Kay, Daniel, Tatum, and Hannah at their Blanco location, plus one very important member of the team: Peso 🤠🐾

We had fun showing off the store, but we also really wanted to capture the people and craft behind Herb’s. Daniel was actively shaping a hat while we shot, giving Alejandro a chance to capture something that has been at the heart of the Herb’s experience for five decades. Because you don’t just walk in, grab a hat off the shelf, and call it a day. The team helps you find the right one, shapes it for you, and makes the whole experience feel personal.

We love seeing what Bryan and Kay have done with a San Antonio institution. They didn’t create the Herb’s legacy, but over the last 10 years they’ve become its caretakers, growing it, expanding it, and making sure a whole new generation gets to experience it.

And between the hats, the shaping, the Blanco backdrop, and Peso doing his best to steal the show, Alejandro had plenty to work with!

When your latest campaign is called “Now Boarding,” there’s really only one place to shoot!

We joined Daphne and the Airo team with Michael at a private hangar, with a private jet and a model ready to take off on a very fabulous getaway.

Travel has always been part of Airo’s DNA. Daphne created the brand with the on-the-go traveler in mind, so rather than simply photographing product, we wanted the images to tell a story. Our model boarding a private jet felt like a pretty perfect way to do it.

And honestly, this was one of those shoots where getting the shot was an experience in itself. There were a lot of moving pieces and a lot of awesome people who came together to give us access to the hangar and plane and help bring the whole idea to life.

That’s one of our favorite things about creating The Scout Guide. Sometimes someone throws out a slightly crazy idea, everyone says “let’s do it,” and somehow we end up standing on a tarmac watching it come to life.

We can’t wait for y’all to see the final photos because this one is pretty freaking cool!
