On this episode of The SchmearCast:

Take a time machine to 1970s New York with two new films set in the era: Jason Reitman’s SATURDAY NIGHT, a tribute to SNL, and Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump biopic, THE APPRENTICE.

Screenwriter @haveyoumettedd joins Schmear to break down Reitman’s film, discussing its strengths, shortcomings, standout performances, and whether it reveals anything new about SNL’s enigmatic leader, Lorne Michaels.

Next, an analysis of THE APPRENTICE starring Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn. Is Trump too strange to satirize, and does that explain the film’s lukewarm reception?

Finally, filmmaker @ryanmichaelsss makes the case for DISCLAIMER* , Alfonso Cuarón’s psychological thriller starring Cate Blanchett, now airing on Apple TV.

I’m thrilled to announce that the inaugural episode of The SchmearCast is here. If you enjoy this page you are guaranteed to love this podcast. Expect reviews and breakdowns of the best and latest across movies, TV, and more. Riveting conversations, discerning analysis, and curated opinions — it’s all here.

Episode 1 is a countdown of my top 20 films of 2023, introduced by illustrious readers like you. A huge thank you to all participants for sharing their favorites.

The SchmearCast will be a conversational extension of The Schmear Hunter.

The podcast will really dig into topics and segments, bringing in fresh perspectives from talented experts. Get excited for True Detective: Night Country weekly recaps, a “Criterion Challenge 2024” watch-along, deep-dive movie reviews (Hello Dune 2), and, of course, the latest goings-on in the industry to help you stay up-to-date. Most importantly, this will be fun and informative.

Everyone has their own podcast rotation. I know adding one more to the mix is a BIG ASK. But trust me, The SchmearCast will be executed with enthusiasm and the utmost professionalism.

To quote Coach Jim Harbaugh, it’d be an “ecstatic joy” to welcome you aboard. I know this is going to be a fun ride.

Never done a reel, so why not? And I liked the song… And my time in LA has been alright so far, I guess.
