Part 1 of a discussion around float reception and some things to think about. 🤔
1. Don’t over hinge at the hips; get space by rounding your shoulders (you can’t track the ball as well when you bend over and look up)
2. Knees above toes, shoulders above knees
3. Be an athlete first, smooth moves
4. Stay relaxed but finish forward (at least 1 shoulder) - platform to target or away from target depending on speed of serve, shape in the body stays the same as much as possible
5. Know how to handle it when you’re wrong

As the level gets higher, a float serve has a lot of heat on it. Sometimes it’s too much to hand pass. Sometimes you don’t want to start super far up because you have a back row route to run. Maybe it’s a hybrid? Be comfortable with your platform on a float! This is tough when the ball moves in the last 5 feet… you have to stay athletic in your posture and relaxed in your platform (try wider arms or bending elbows on the finish) so you can adjust. Train different touches on the platform!
Most young players recognize late the ball is deep, and sometimes the serve moves or “jumps” on you and you don’t have time to get the space you want until just before. Don’t be too rigid in your technique. There are last minute moves to still pass good balls and handle “being wrong” better. It’ll make you more confident. I’ve seen it work at the pro level and with juniors, I’ve even used it myself at a D1 college level. 👍

Quick Tip: Some athletes (especially high fliers) are more comfortable straight on or even inside out. If they have good body control and the step-close is balanced and open, they can open chest plenty on the jump and still finish their shoulder through the shot. An inside out route is just fine, and tougher to line up with on the block. Like everything else though, TRAIN IT TO FIND OUT! 😬 #tdlvolleyball #trainingdoesntlie

No-look line doesn’t mean arm only, and you don’t literally have to not look on the finish for it to score (though you can, and it feels good) 😂

1. Make sure healthy armswing and hip-torso separation is there first
2. Left arm into the body
3. Finishing shoulder through the shot or “leaning into the ball” sideways can be done without full hip / torso rotation
4. Careful not to finish shoulder back away from the ball or take it behind you
5. Always involve the body!

Have fun perfecting this one!

Don’t miss Head Coach JW Kiekhefer in town to run a fun, fast paced, all-skills camp! Athletes will be separated by skill level and receive high level instruction in 2 sessions. Carthage is a 2x National Championship winning program with 3 of our alumni currently playing there, who just competed in a National Championship again, this year and got Runner-Up!! Highly encouraged to attend and learn from Coach JW!!
