When I first started coaching… a bit ago… I thought my only purpose was to change the lives of the young people I coached. But the older I get, the more I realize coaching isn’t just about changing others. Sometimes it’s about allowing others to change you and this group changed me.

Several years ago, I was handed this core group of girls. I was told they were talented enough to compete at the Open level, and choosing to play Open isn’t the norm around here. Everywhere we went, we’d warm up against nationally recognized clubs, and they’d ask, “Where are you from?” Followed almost immediately by, “Wait… where is Wichita?”

So we embraced it. We started calling ourselves “Miss Irrelevant”—a nod to the NFL’s “Mr. Irrelevant,” the very last player drafted. We weren’t supposed to be there and we weren’t the team people expected to remember.

These girls willingly gave up easier paths, guaranteed wins, and comfortable gold brackets for the opportunity to stand across the net from the very best. They chose growth over comfort. Challenge over recognition. They chose the road that demanded more because they believed obstacles weren’t something to avoid—they were the way forward. They completely redefined what success looks like.

Over the years, I’ve learned countless lessons from the athletes I’ve had the privilege to coach. But no group has challenged me, inspired me, or helped me grow more than this one. The best thing about them is how exceptional they are when they’re together.

Somewhere along the way, they accomplished something far greater than winning volleyball matches—they reminded me why I fell in love with coaching in the first place. And for that, I’ll be grateful forever.

This past season (and three years) have been unbelievable. From being a nervous 12 year old practicing with older girls, to having the older sisters I always wanted. We have laughed together, cried together, made countless memories, and most importantly loved each other through all of it. I’m so thankful for a group of girls who can compete and hold each other accountable on the court, and still be the closest friends off the court. I wouldn’t trade these girls for the world!

And Coach Ashleigh has not only coached me to be a better volleyball player, but a better person. Thank you for seeing something in 12 year old me that I didn’t even know was there. Thank you for making every moment special; whether it was joking around off the court or a timeout during a heated match, I always knew I could count on you. Thank you for everything @smashleighhoulton.

Although I am sad this chapter of my volleyball career is closing, I am beyond excited to see what these girls accomplish in volleyball and in life. I love @shockwave_17black forever.🥹🩵

The 17-1 crew left it all out there for each other!!! AAU Nationals was their last tourney as a team with a group of kids that’s played together over the years — some of them are graduating early next year and following different paths than club volleyball.
