Filmmakers in Florida have a strong tradition of telling stories that capture the challenges and beauty of life inside and outside of the Sunshine State. SUNSHINE IN DOC-LAND: NEW FLORIDA DOCUMENTARY SHORTS celebrates the rich and diverse voices that make up the patchwork landscape of this unique multicultural place we call home.

🍊 Disney Wol: Page 1 Shaking The Tree - In 1973, Eileen and her siblings are promised a trip to “the happiest place on earth”. A sibling squabble breaks out at the breakfast table, and plans are thwarted. But her grandfather steps in to salvage the day.

🍊 Boil That Cabbage Down - As Candace, a Florida filmmaker and novice banjo player, begins to learn her first tune, she uncovers the complex history of the banjo—a musical instrument created by enslaved Black people as a remedy and a vessel for ancestral spirits.

🍊 Mookie, Mo, and Me - “Mookie, Mo, and Me” is a stunning visual documentary of a man and his dog enjoying their morning routine, a 600-meter open ocean swim off the coast of Delray Beach.

🍊 Not Rod - Forty years later after his musical dreams faded, George turns the very thing that held him back – his resemblance to Rod Stewart – into his ticket to success.

🍊 Dream American - Monkeys riding dogs herding sheep? The jaw-dropping spectacle of fringe-wearing simian cowboys gives way to the unexpectedly affecting love story behind a novelty monkey rodeo act.

🍊 No Leg Power - CJ Bellamy had it all going for him in high school, with hopes of making it in the NBA, until an accident changed everything. In the aftermath of that tragedy, CJ finds a new purpose through CrossFit.

🍊 Edel Rodriguez: Freedom is a Verb - A vivid exploration of artist Edel Rodriguez’s journey from his early life in Cuba to acclaim in the United States. Rodriguez’s time in Cuba and immigration has influenced iconic artwork and his political courage in depicting the 45th president.

SUNSHINE IN DOC-LAND: NEW FLORIDA DOCUMENTARY SHORTS screens Saturday, April 19 at 2:30pm. Tickets to the 2025 Florida Film Festival are available now at the link in our bio, or at floridafilmfestival.com

This program is sponsored by Orlando Film Commission.
