How do our bodies share energy, sustain effort, and care for one another? 🌀

Pilot Episodes resident artist, Jessie Garon (@jessiegaron) explores sustainability as a choreographic question, drawing on the rhythms of biogeochemical cycles, the structure of relay racing, and the shared labour of agricultural harvesting. Working with TDT’s company dancers, they investigate how energy moves between bodies, how effort is distributed, and how movement can become a system of exchange and care.

Join us for an informal open rehearsal and get a glimpse into Jessie’s creative process as the work unfolds.

At 7AM, I joined the dancers for the final ritual of Ephemera: The Art We Didn’t Make.

After twelve hours of collecting, carrying, witnessing and caring for the art dreams entrusted to us by the public, we closed the creative-world portal we had opened the night before.

For twelve hours, these dancers had been the guardians of those dreams.

And in this final moment, we released them from that role—out of the ritual, out of the world we had built together, and back into regular life.

I wanted to enter the work with them at the end. To share the weight of what we had been carrying. To mark the labour of twelve continuous hours of performance and caretaking. And to celebrate what we had made together before allowing it to end.

What an honour it was to join the artists of Toronto Dance Theatre in this moment.

There was something deeply moving about standing among them as the world of Ephemera came to a close: surrounded by the traces of thousands of gestures, offerings and unrealized possibilities that had accumulated throughout the night.

Thank you to every person who trusted us with a piece of the art they didn’t make.

What is the art you didn’t make?

The painting you imagined.
The dance you never started.
The book still living in your head.
The song, the film, the garden, the dress, the thing you wanted to make but didn’t—or couldn’t.

For EPHEMERA: The Art We Didn’t Make, I’m asking Toronto to share these unrealized creative dreams.

Your responses become part of the work.

Written onto leaves along a vine, they are gathered and carried into the installation by the dancers. Over the course of 12 hours, these individual offerings accumulate—filling the space with a collective archive of what might have been.

On our final day of rehearsal, the Toronto Dance Theatre dancer collaborators filled a vine of their own.

Soon, we’ll be asking you to add yours.

What is the art you didn’t make?

How does the way our bodies change every day contribute to this greater rot?

This week, Emily Duckett (@emilyduckett_) explores these ideas for their Pilot Episodes residency with the TDT ensemble

Emily is a Black, queer dance artist based in Tkaronto who’s currently interested in the links between body horror and feminism through a Black, queer lens. Looking at decay and aging as a genre of body horror, the human body is a source of inspiration for them — how do we feel this cellular feeling in a gargantuan way?

Their artistic expression is profoundly influenced by their intersecting identities, and centres on themes of queer time theory, decomposition, rejection, gut feelings, cravings and chaos, pleasure and paradoxes.

Get a glimpse into the creative process and hear from Emily! Join us this Friday for an informal open rehearsal

✨ A SEASON OF SUPPORT & NEW POSSIBILITIES ✨

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔/𝟐𝟕 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧.
A place where ideas take shape, artists take risks, and possibility comes first.

TDT’s new season creates space for 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦, 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺—supporting artists in what they make, and in how they make it.

This season, step into the process:

🌿 𝙀𝙥𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙖: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘼𝙧𝙩 𝙒𝙚 𝘿𝙞𝙙𝙣’𝙩 𝙈𝙖𝙠𝙚 — Guest choreographer Blessyl Buan (@drblessyl) transforms Old City Hall into a 12-hour site-responsive installation exploring unfinished dreams, unrealized ideas, and what gets left behind. Presented in collaboration with @nuitblancheto

👣 𝙍𝙤𝙨𝙚’𝙨 𝙂𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 — Winchester Street Theatre becomes an immersive haunted house of ghostly performances, live music, storytelling rituals and unexpected encounters.

🌌 𝙒𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙧 — TDT’s seven company dancers meet seven electronic musicians to create new solo works through cross-disciplinary collaboration and exchange, all in one production.

⚡ 𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙩&𝙎𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙩 𝙏𝙤𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙤 — The iconic performance party returns for its fourth edition in the city, bringing together 25+ artists with only 3 minute each. Expect bursts of bold experimentation.

🌱 𝙋𝙞𝙡𝙤𝙩 𝙀𝙥𝙞𝙨𝙤𝙙𝙚𝙨: 𝙀𝙭𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙙 — Five choreographers join TDT’s company dancers for multi-day residencies designed to give new ideas more time, space, and possibility.

And throughout the season, 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲. 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴.
A question, an experiment, a risk, a collaboration, a possibility.

⭐ What a season it has been ⭐

From bold new works and unforgettable experimental experiences, to artist residencies, workshops, collaborations, and open sharings, the 2025/26 season has been a celebration of what becomes possible when artists, audiences, collaborators, and community come together.

We shared stories, challenged perspectives, welcomed distinct choreographic voices, supported artists throughout their developmental processes, and continued to steward space for dance and performance to connect us—to one another and to the world around us.

From Toronto premieres of Make Banana Cry, The Room Upstairs, layers of kin, and Songs for Bones, Flesh, Sweat, to residencies, community programs, partnerships, and so many moments of gathering, take a look back at this incredible season of movement, connection, experimentation, and community.

Thank you for being part of TDT’s community ❤️

Even on a motion set, we always find time for still images. We squeezed in a few shots of our beautiful tablescape between takes. The best of both worlds!
