I can’t believe it’s been just over a week already. The impact of last weekend’s event is hitting me so hard this year because I’m finally starting to feel the result of things bearing fruit from seeds I planted years ago.

You may have been victim to one of my late night, “what do you want to see in our community?” conversations– that often happen on the sidewalk at 2am, but conversations like these have opened the door to make tangible change in our city.

We have agency over what we want to see exist. The Asian Night Market Festival means so much to me because it proves this fact.

“Do we really need to close ALL 6 lanes of Classen for the festival?”

Hard yes.

I wanted this decision to consciously inconvenience our city in order to give our Asian community one weekend where they can feel safe, visible, and celebrated.

The phrase “be inconvenienced for your community” has been floating around, and I’m glad it is, because we’ve lost what it means to exist in community on a daily basis– not just when it gets squeezed into empty time blocks on our calendar.

Become “inconvenienced.” Get stuck in traffic. Search for parking. Wait in line.

Questions I’m always thinking about are:
What shapes a city? Creates organic community? How do you give a community hope? What are the barriers/perceived barriers between where we are and where we want to be?

I’ve found that the perceived barriers exist far more often than actual ones.

You say, “I wish we had ___.”

My response is always, “why can’t we?”

I always want to be the hardest “trier” in the room. Or one of them. (It’s definitely more fun when there are several of us, doing the best we can simply because we want to.)

Showing up is the only way forward. Every single day. I don’t care how I feel. I don’t care what the weather is like. I just know that in the meantime, I’ll still be out here sweeping the sidewalks. Or scrubbing graffiti off our building. Or throwing a big block party.

We must continue to build with the tools we already have in our hands.

Tonight, every part of my body still hurts.

I couldn’t be more grateful.🖤 Hq coffee and matcha at the Asian night market festival in Oklahoma City
