And finally, the game showcase section of the Game Jam. This is the hard work and dedication of our amazing Game Dev community. Without them, we wouldn't have an event like this to begin with. This year, we had more than triple the number of participants and submissions. We are thankful for everyone that came out to the event and supported each other.

Thank you to @edmontonscreen @ieeeorg @sa_macewan @macewancs for your support.

The full video of presentations, playtesting and prizes will be posted on YouTube soon. All of the games are posted on itch. Links in bio.

Congratulations to the winners @lilyfry4 @mydayokay @static_arc @lysorii @velcei , Joseph, Kyle, Benjamin, Teddy, Catherine, and Lisa.

Do you want to explore the rocks that lie at the very heart of Ukraine?🪨

📅 March 17
🕒 12:30 PM (Talk begins at 1:00 PM)
📍 Room 11-458, Allard Hall

Hidden beneath much of central and eastern Ukraine is the Ukrainian Shield, a broad zone of incredibly old bedrock that has been around for more than two billion years, forming during the planet’s earliest chapters. These ancient foundations are not just interesting to look at, they are central to Ukraine’s natural resources. Iron ore from the eastern Shield has long been economically important, and nearby areas host major manganese deposits as well as rare-metal rocks that can contain lithium. Because so much of this ancient bedrock is exposed at the surface, the Ukrainian Shield offers a rare chance to study Earth’s deep history firsthand and see how major mineral resources form. This presentation will introduce the Shield’s main rock types, key geological features, and why understanding this ancient terrain still matters today in contexts of science, industry, and geopolitics.

Dr. Serhiy Buryak is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Sciences at MacEwan University whose work explores how landscapes and climates in the far north have changed over time. His research focuses on tephrochronology and geochronology, using volcanic ash layers and chemical signatures to build precise timelines for Yukon-Alaska and subarctic Canada. Originally from Ukraine, he earned his PhD from the University of Alberta and teaches courses in mineralogy, petrology, paleoclimatology, and climate systems. By combining stratigraphy, geochemistry and dating techniques, Dr. Buryak helps piece together the environmental history of northern regions and refine our understanding of the Quaternary period.

Join us for Unnatural Disasters: The History and Politics of Famines🌾

Nearing its centennial, the Holodomor remains tragically relevant in the contemporary world. This presentation will examine that relevance through an exploration of the particular characteristics of this forced famine, which reverberate across the last century’s sordid history of tragedy and terror, of mass atrocity and genocide. It’s an intertwined tale of memory and denial that plays out to this day, in the form of the destruction of memorials in Ukraine and the development of new online courses in Canada – an ongoing political battle in the present over the increasingly distant yet increasingly pressing past.

Henry Prown is the 2022-2025 Temerty Postdoctoral Fellow in Holodomor Studies with the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium at the University of Alberta and an instructor in the History, Classics, and Religion Department. He received his doctorate in American Studies at William & Mary in 2022 with a dissertation focused on the Daily Worker – the “Central Organ” of the Communist Party of the United States during the Great Depression and beyond. His current research broadly examines the relationship between Stalinism and the US media in the 1930s, and is the subject of a recent monograph with Bloomsbury Academic: Communist Propaganda in Pre-Cold War America (2025).

Speakers: Aidan Forth, Alissa Overend, Henry Prown
Moderated by: Sheena Rossiter

We look forward to seeing you there.
