“What exists before sound begins?”

Sound travels through space and time from the moment it emerges. But what comes before it?

Held to Heard explores what lies beneath this outward movement, tracing sound back to its origins and the conditions that make it possible.

Sound may begin long before we hear it. Desire, emotion, tension, friction, and chance can all play a part in bringing it into being.

Working with wind, environmental sounds, electronics, cello, and piano, we explore how movement and energy take shape as sound.

Locations may change depending on wind and weather conditions. If you’d like to join us, please send a DM in advance.

Come dream with us of possible futures for our beautiful blue planet.

In Sky Cities: Futures in Flux, architecture becomes floating cities, shifting structures and imagined worlds, brought to life through cyanotype on paper and fabric.

Alongside the exhibition, Umoya (2026), an independent audio work by PURE, Denise and Sage Botanicas, invites listening and reflection.

I’d love you to join me for the opening:

📅 Thursday, 15 October 2026
🕕 17:00
📍 THE AVA Gallery, Front Gallery, Cape Town

Save the date, and bring someone who loves art.

Introducing the Scrubber Crank, a member of the new Crank to Crank family. Also my beloved Fostex X-18 brought back to life.

I've been undercover for a while developing a new approach for an exciting upcoming @heretohear.sound event focused on tape media such as VHS, reel to reel, cassette tape. Happening 22 September at @ganesh_capetown

This has resulted in me digging out my old 4 track recorder, stripping it down and ordering parts from probably the only suppliers left in the world (in China of course). And with relief hearing it play once again.

Then of course digging through my tape collection: master tapes and prerecorded tape resulting in waves of nostalgia.

Whilst waiting for parts to arrive I started work on a sequencer Crank instrument inspired by high end studio reel to reel machines, in this case, of course, using peanut butter jars, duct tape and magnets.

After 3 iterations, it started working. An old phaser pedal from the 1980s helped as well.

So now trying to bring it all together. The new and the old, pushing the envelope (or tape?) to make something in a way that I haven't worked with for a while.

Pre-digital media in a world saturated with the digital. A way of dealing with the overwhelm.

#analogue #cassette #cassettedeck #4track #4trackrecorder #fostex #ambient #portastudio #diymusic #diyinstruments #crankmusic A musical instrument consisting of two rotating cylinders with a tape band running around them. Magnets inserted in the band repel another magnet which creates a noise
