TW // rape and suicide Young Carlin (Ray Winstone) is sent to a hellish borstal where he faces nothing but brutality and has to use violence in order to work his way to the top. Someone told me that because I saw “Bad Boys”, I could handle this. I have news for you: just because I watched “Bad Boys” does NOT mean that I could handle this yet somehow I managed to sit through the entire film. One of, if not, the most truly traumatizing 70s film I’ve laid my eyes on, “Scum” will make you take a long shower after watching it. I’m not kidding; I took one as soon as it was done. It’s legitimately the scariest non-horror film I’ve ever seen and one of the best prison/juvenile institution films ever made. It’s not just Carlin’s story; the whole film is about life in a borstal. Most films have me rooting for the main protagonist, but here, I felt little sympathy towards most of the characters. I don’t mean that as a bad thing however; it was thoroughly fascinating. All I could say is that the one true good character would be the intellectual Archer (Mick Ford). By the way, all of the acting is splendidly believable. The pacing is strong, the cinematography simplistic yet well-done, and the casual violence is bone-chilling...which leads me into the overall content inside the movie. This is not for the faint of heart in the slightest. There’s hardcore racism that includes slurs I never knew existed, brutally appalling violence, and a rape scene so horrific I had to look away. I mean this: the scene (which is from 1:20:18 to 1:23:07) lingers in my memory. Not to mention, two terrifyingly distressing suicides; one is at 1:09:40 and the other is at 1:27:40. “Scum” is not for you or me. It’s viscerally discomforting and ugly, but it was so beautifully made at the same time. Don’t take this review for granted...it was a superb film, but it’s one I will never watch again. This film gets a 10/10 ⛓ #scum #raywinstone #phildaniels #alanclarke #70sfilm #70scinema
