Meiway 🇨🇮

Born Frédéric Désiré Ehui on 17 March 1962, Meiway is closely associated with Grand-Bassam, a historic coastal town in Côte d’Ivoire, although his official biography lists Abidjan as his birthplace. He grew up surrounded by musical influences, including church singing, local brass bands, and traditional rhythms from southern Côte d’Ivoire.

His passion for music developed early. He sang in church and participated in musical groups while at school. In 1978, he won the Podium competition with the group PACE, an important early milestone that encouraged him to pursue music more seriously.

Meiway’s music celebrates African identity, cultural pride, and the power of dance. Over a career spanning several decades, he helped bring Ivorian musical traditions to audiences across Africa and beyond, establishing himself as one of the leading figures in the country's popular music scene.

Devera Ngwena Jazz Band 🇿🇼

The band's story began in the late 1970s at Gaths Mine in Mashava, near Masvingo, Zimbabwe. Its rise was closely associated with Jonah Moyo, the singer, songwriter, and bandleader who helped turn a group formed to entertain mineworkers and their families into one of the country's best-known musical acts. The band grew out of an initiative to provide entertainment for the mining community, with musicians rehearsing and performing at local gatherings before making their breakthrough as recording artists.

In 1979, the group recorded “Devera Ngwena Zhimozhi,” a song that helped establish its name across Zimbabwe. The band's name is commonly understood as meaning “follow the crocodile” in Shona. Its early success demonstrated that music developed in a working-class mining community could reach audiences far beyond its original home.

Although the word jazz appears in their name, Devera Ngwena Jazz Band is closely associated with Zimbabwean sungura, a popular guitar-based genre influenced by Congolese rumba and other Central and Southern African musical traditions. Their music reflects the creativity of Zimbabwean musicians who adapted international influences into a sound that spoke directly to local audiences.

Pierre Akendengue 🇬🇦

Pierre-Claver Akendengué was born on 25 April 1943 in Awuta, Gabon, in the Nkomi cultural region near the Fernan Vaz lagoon. He grew up surrounded by the musical and oral traditions of his community, where songs, storytelling, and ancestral knowledge played an important role in preserving cultural identity.

His earliest musical influences came from family members who played traditional instruments alongside the Western musical traditions he encountered during his education. At Collège Bessieux in Libreville, he studied musical notation and became familiar with Gregorian chant, whose melodic character resonated with the traditional music of his homeland.

For decades, Akendengué has used music to explore African identity, colonial history, social inequality, and the relationship between tradition and modernity. His work reaches beyond entertainment, offering listeners a thoughtful reflection on the experiences, struggles, and aspirations of African people.

🇿🇲 October 24, 1964

Northern Rhodesia had long been a British protectorate, its economy dominated by copper mining and its politics shaped by colonial administrators. Africans were marginalized, denied meaningful political participation, and subjected to racial segregation. Yet, by the late 1950s, nationalist movements across Africa inspired Zambians to demand freedom. The United National Independence Party (UNIP), led by Kenneth Kaunda, became the driving force behind the independence struggle, mobilizing workers, students, and rural communities.

On October 24, 1964, Northern Rhodesia cast off the weight of colonial rule and emerged as the independent Republic of Zambia. This day, celebrated annually as Zambia’s Independence Day, marks a pivotal moment in African history, the triumph of self-determination and the birth of a new nation under the leadership of Kenneth Kaunda.

Montreux met Africa for the first time in March 2026.

For three days, one of the world’s most established music festivals made its home beneath the mountains of the Franschhoek Valley. Crowds gathered from far and wide, the music carried late into the evening, and a festival born on the shores of Lake Geneva found a new rhythm on African soil.

Sam Nhlengethwa, one of South Africa’s most celebrated artists, gave that arrival its first image. His poster showed a musician absorbed in his instrument, surrounded by sheet music and warm, layered colour. It felt both unmistakably Montreux and unmistakably ours.

That poster now marks the moment Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek began. In 2027, a new artist will add the next layer to our story.

Save the dates: Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek 19–21 March 2027. Watch this space, because the 2027 poster is almost here.

For 60 years, Montreux Jazz Festival has turned music into art.

The poster tradition began in Montreux, Switzerland, in 1967. Over the decades, some of the most celebrated names in art and music have been given real creative freedom to interpret the festival in their own way, among them Keith Haring, Andy Warhol and David Bowie.

But the posters were never just about promotion. Each one became a record of its moment, telling the story of a festival, a year and a sound through colour, line and imagination.

Their work captures more than what happens on stage. It catches the surge of energy, colour and form that passes between a performer and a crowd, and it is an expression of what the festival will feel like.

Save the dates: Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek 19–21 March 2027. Watch this space as we unveil more about our African Encore, starting with the poster that will set the tone for all that is to come...
