Aiden, 17, is one of over a million young carers across the UK. With an average age of 12, this hidden army equates to two kids in every school class. But do they feel supported at school? Or for what comes next?

In Walthamstow, east London, Guardian Documentaries met a group of young carers as they gathered for a rare night off that brings them a sense of community and a glimpse of fun for a few hours every few weeks.

It’s hosted by Satvinder, a tenacious council worker who fights to improve the recognition of young carers in her borough and provides them with crucial emotional support.

Unpaid carers save the UK economy an estimated £184 billion each year – the equivalent of a second NHS – but research shows that almost 60% say they feel overwhelmed most of the time.

Guardian Documentaries commissioned this short film to coincide with Carers Week in the UK, a campaign that celebrates unpaid carers across the country and calls for better recognition and support for them.
