DAY 17 | Sodankylä → Inari 🇫🇮
201 km | 1,068 m

Woke to rain absolutely howling down outside. A quick check of my new best friend — Epic Ride Weather — said wait.

So I did. Proper Finnish breakfast, another coffee, and watched the weather instead of riding through it. The receptionist laughed about the riders who’d left an hour earlier in the downpour. 😬

Best decision of the day. By the time I rolled out, the worst had passed — and I stayed dry.

And what a day.

This was the Lapland I’d been waiting for: huge empty roads, endless forests and lakes, enormous skies… and reindeer increasingly appearing at the roadside. 🦌

Then the Wahoo delivered a number that suddenly made everything feel very real:

500 km to go.

Lunch in Saariselkä — burger, chips and chocolate protein milk, because ultra-cycling nutrition 😂 — then back north.

A few hours later:

400 km to go.

The scenery just kept getting better as the road wound between forests and lakes under that extraordinary Arctic evening light.

Finally, Inari. Warm bed, washing machine and dryer — everything cleaned and reset for the final two days.

After thousands of kilometres, Nordkapp no longer feels like a distant point at the top of the map.

Two days. One final push. 🇳🇴

DAY 14 | Lycksele → Boden 🇸🇪
275 km | 1,620 m ↑

Windy and wonderful.

Then rain. More rain. And then some. 🌧️

For much of the day, though, this was everything I love about riding through northern Sweden: huge skies, endless roads disappearing into the forest, hardly any traffic and mile after mile where the only thing to do is turn the pedals and take it all in.

There were the usual NorthCape moments along the way too — unexpected sights, improvised fuelling, and acts of kindness appearing seemingly from nowhere.

And then there was Eva’s morale stop. ❤️

Coffee, food, balloons, shelter and a wonderfully warm welcome waiting at the side of a wet Swedish road for a bunch of increasingly bedraggled cyclists. These little encounters have an impact completely out of proportion to the few minutes you spend there. Thank you, Eva.

Then it was time to get moving again.

I’d chosen Boden rather than Älvsbyn for the night. As the weather deteriorated, I began to wonder whether that had been such a clever idea.

It meant another 50 km.

In darkness.

In driving rain.

Into a hefty headwind.

By then the day had become a proper thrashing. The last 100 km increasingly came down to one very simple mental image: a hot shower, a warm bed and dry clothes.

Sometimes that’s enough.

I finally rolled into the hotel just shy of midnight — soaked, battered and very ready to stop.

And then discovered it had an overnight drying room for my kit.

At that particular moment, quite possibly the greatest hotel amenity ever invented. 😂

275 km done. Boden reached. Day 14 in the bag.

Tomorrow, north again. 🚴‍♂️🇸🇪

Day 8 | Värnamo 🇸🇪 ➡️ Gränna 📍➡️ Hallsberg

250km | Checkpoint 4 ✔️ | 2,000km ridden… halfway to Nordkapp.

Day 8 began in Värnamo with a proper Swedish breakfast. Bread, cheese, coffee… and eggs, of course. Some things simply aren’t negotiable.

The first target was Checkpoint 4 in Gränna, 110km away.

Sweden continued to deliver—quiet roads, forests, lakes and endless blue skies. But before the checkpoint came another essential stop…

🍦 Ice cream in Jönköping.

It seems to be becoming an unofficial NorthCape4000 tradition. While enjoying it, we stumbled across what could only have been the inaugural International Cycling Chess Championships. Cyclists really will race anything!

Just 15km before Gränna, another memorable moment.

A young lad had set up a homemade juice stand with his family beside the road. We stopped for a drink and stayed for the conversation. Complete strangers continue to greet us with kindness and encouragement. Those moments fuel you just as much as the food.

Checkpoint 4 safely stamped, I caught up with Michael and Iannis for lunch. The Swedish dish of the day—nicknamed the “Elvis Special”—was meatballs, potatoes, gravy and lingonberries. Exactly what was needed before another 140km in the saddle.

Just after 10pm I rolled into Hallsberg.

Everything was closed…

…except the bowling alley.

Thankfully, it served the legendary Viking Boat Pizza—part pizza, part calzone, part kebab. After 250km, it tasted Michelin-star worthy.

But today’s biggest milestone wasn’t the checkpoint.

Somewhere on a quiet Swedish road, my Wahoo rolled past 2,000km.

Halfway.

Halfway between Rovereto and Nordkapp.

There’s still a long road ahead, but for the first time the finish feels a little closer than the start.

❤️ Every mile supports @mindcharity and the @rnli Thank you for following the journey—and if you’d like to support either charity, the links are in my bio.

Day 2 ✔️ | Munich Checkpoint | The rhythm begins

Day 2 began exactly as Day 1 ended… with rain. Plenty of it.

Thankfully, after a proper soaking the skies finally cleared, revealing some incredible Bavarian scenery. Days like this remind you why you put up with the wet kit and cold starts.

The bike continues to impress. Point it downhill and it just wants to fly. I’ve discovered that 52 km/h seems to be my natural cruising speed on the descents—fast enough to keep things exciting, but still with plenty in reserve! (28-34 on the flats too - love the Oval chainring!)

Lunch brought one of those moments that makes events like this so special. Portions were enormous, and fellow rider Pum kindly gifted me the remains of his lunch rather than see it go to waste. A generous gesture and a great time saver. Thanks, Pum! 😁

Munich marked my first official race checkpoint and my very first stamp on the race card. A small piece of ink, but a milestone that makes the journey feel properly underway.

Finding accommodation proved harder than expected, so rather than stop early I pushed on beyond Wolnzach, riding through one of those perfect warm summer evenings that remind you how lucky we are to experience Europe by bike.

And yes… let’s talk about that 42T oval chainring.

These were the same hills where, last year, I found myself standing on almost every climb. History appears to be repeating itself. Whether it’s because I’ve slightly overgeared the bike or because standing gives my backside a welcome break, I’m still not entirely sure! Either way, the climbs keep coming—and so do I.

At 23:30 I finally rolled into Abensberg to be greeted by the glowing Golden Arches. Fine dining? Maybe not. But after another long day in the saddle, a McDonald’s shared with another rider who’d arrived just ahead of me tasted absolutely perfect.

The bike found a secure underground garage. I found a bed.

Life is good.

Tomorrow, pushing further north! 🚴

I’m a long train running!

20 years photographing events, over 10 years photographing @acumen_law convention and here the thing - most of my photographing life, I have not thought to look after my body - it has just served me!

Then two years ago I suffered from a frozen shoulder 😮

I was in such excruciating pain that I would cry on the way to a photo session in extreme pain thinking that this would be my last one!

I embraced my membership @floatspahove and from restorative yoga to Pilates classes gained traction. I study and use the incredible @theixchelsystem to understand my alignment from the inside out - wow. I’ve been helped with Physio @sabreenactivephysioclinics and @dorapandi and I feel that I have my body stronger and in healing mode.

It’s not just the heavy cameras over the years of photographing, it’s the tension of living in this world that demands so much of us!

Please take this post as you call to look after your body, find the treatments and exercises that enable you to enjoy using it - especially if you’re a photographer carrying two cameras at events! You are doing a great job and you need to make sure that you look after your body too!

So this is my big thank you to all the lovely people who help me to be in a position that I love, a photographer who captures people’s stories!

Thank you gorgeous @lisafrancesca_nand for videoing me with my camera.

And a warm mention to the super creative @flamingostylingbrighton who decorates many of the spaces of my event shoots making it sooooooo much fun!!

I didn't win Brighton Girl of the Year. And I'll be honest, I was a bit gutted, I really thought this could be my year after being runner up last year.

It was not.

But I had a lovely time trying!

I've made new connections this year and discovered new businesses, found friends and saw so much love in the BG community.

Making Top 5 TWICE with a different line up each year was a big achievement that I am very proud of as that line up was FULL of local powerhouses! Brighton & Hove you are so blooming lucky having this girl gang around to make the city better, healthier, safer and a more fun place to be in.

I loved watching the winners on the awards night, some truly gorgeous reactions of pure joy and emotion. And there was so much love in the room for everyone on stage and off it, what a night!

Massive congrats to all the Queens who took home crowns! You are all ROCKSTARS.

Well done Pippa Moyle, another epic awards night, it's only going to get bigger and better my friend!

Thank you for all of the votes, love, support and cheerleading pre and post awards - it has meant the world you lovely lot.

And thank you to Sabreen Qureshi-Hitchens for not only doing my physio post accident but also nursing the bruise I got on top of my already damaged knee on the way to physio on Awards day (so annoying). And then doing my make up for me and giving me a lift to the awards. There is five star service, and then there is Sabreen!

Also to my carer for the evening Naomi Holbrook it was such a pleasure to go together and the extra support was both needed and appreciated! I am still so worn out and down by the healing process. Did I mention I'm an impatient patient?

And thanks to Oliver for my fancy hair, not sure I can live without a weekly blow dry now. What have you done to me!

I'd like to say now it's time to rest, but it's not. Rockinghorse Circus of Dreams tonight, speaking at the Metrobank Women in Business event next week and next weekend Connected Brighton turns FIVE and we are celebrating with a party at Redroaster (message me for tickets).

Happy weekend all!
