This week we decided to put together a meaningful digital-first editorial package that acknowledges the heroes and the communities impacted by the ongoing crises in the region. We decided to turn the spotlight on people who are creating a positive impact in their communities. They are very real individuals, with very real stories that truly inspire us and give us hope for a better tomorrow. In Lebanon, we brought together the female founders of the main NGOs providing essential support to elderly people, children and even animals. As per the most recent figures, Israeli airstrikes have killed nearly 800 people and displaced around 800,000. Also in Lebanon, we had the true honour of interviewing Dr Ghassan Abu-Sittah, a Palestinian humanitarian celebrated for his work in war zones across the Middle East and as one of the world’s leading specialists in craniofacial surgery. In Beirut, he attends to desperate parents who arrive carrying children whose lives have been shattered in a single moment. In the UAE, as someone who has called this place home for more than a decade, nothing made me prouder than the words of HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. “In the UAE, everyone is Emirati through their love for this land and contributions to it,” stated the president recently. With a population that includes nearly 200 nationalities, this inspired us to produce a cover that celebrates the spirit of unity and cultural diversity of the UAE.
