Raced down the Kowie again, turns out second time is the charm!

So here are 10 life lessons I learnt from the rowing stroke this year:
1. The most important seat is the seat you are in. There is no one greater or less important than you in the boat. The most important thing is simply you serving your function the best you can.
2. Be excellent at following. Greater than your ability to lead the person behind you, is your ability to follow the person in front of you. You cannot lead the person behind you well, if you cannot follow the person in front of you with precision.
3. Sit up tall and breathe. Letting go of how you carry yourself, hold yourself up and keep breathing harms your body more than you think.
4. Once you’ve lifted your blade off water, keep it there. Don’t be greedy and try to take more space. Greed messes up the balance. Greed gives someone else less space.
5. Meet your teammates at the check-points. Going together, at the same time, in synchronicity, adds more to your stroke than being the strongest, fastest or most technically proficient.
6. Prepare to catch. Preparing your blade early ensures you don’t miss the catch or miss the water.
7. Be patient at the catch. There is a moment, an opportunity, where you place your blade and catch. Don’t rush the moment and don’t miss the opportunity.
8. Drive. No matter how hard, how sore, how tired, you push with your legs as hard as you can for as long as you can to build the momentum and speed.
9. Discipline. Training light without correcting errors will lead to racing light with errors. Training with disciplined force and disciplined technique will lead to racing with discipline. You race the way you trained.
10. Be a good listener. Whether you think the cox has made a good call or not, you listen. Choosing not to, causes chaos. It’s either one voice in the boat or nine different voices with different opinions and thinking processes.

(It’s not about rowing)

It’s one stroke at a time.
One good catch. One good call. One percent more. One split faster. One personal best. One race won at a time.

And just like that… one bronze at a time baby! 🥉

Happy 2 years of life to ME

Being diagnosed with a rare spinal cord disease is one way to live out your early 20’s , a time where I was figuring out who I was and planning a future for myself. BUT NO.

Today, I look back and thank God for resilience, patience, motivation and Love.

It has been a long journey and I know it is far from over but this year I look forward, to what life has on offer, the people I will meet, the bonds that will form and the the differences I will make in the lives of others.
