Join us Wednesday, September 16 from 12pm-2pm for the reception of Jay Chung’s @djay_studio “Pending”, on view at Brookhaven’s Forum Gallery! Listen about Jay Chung’s creative process, ask the artist questions in a live Q&A, and enjoy good food and conversation with other creatives.

About the artist:
Jay Chung’s paintings work between figuration and dissolution. Figures rise to the surface of thickly layered oil on canvas, blur back into the ground, and hold their form at the edge of disappearance. The boundary between body and environment does not resolve. It stays open, under pressure, as a condition rather than a subject.

Chung has developed his practice through residencies and exhibitions internationally, including a recent residency in Berlin. An encounter with the remains of the Berlin Wall brought into focus something central to his work: that boundaries do not disappear. They diffuse, becoming the atmosphere we inhabit.

Can’t make the reception? The show will be open from August 24th-October 9th. All campus galleries are open Monday-Friday 10am to 4pm. Have questions or want to know more about upcoming events? Visit our Virtual Arts Calendar (🔗link in bio) or email us at galleries@dallascollege.edu!

Sono arrivata! Arrived yesterday and am still settling in. So excited this will be my studio for the next three weeks, within a palazzo with a serene courtyard, fabulous library and a kitchen of my dreams. (At the time of the recording, I did not yet know of my "secret" private bathroom—stay tuned for that clip!) Everyone I met has been lovely, and of course the art, culture and city of Firenze will be incredibly inspiring. Grazie mille per questa opportunità!

Ciao! Jules Maidoff I painted this in your class in spring 1996. The painting is now lost. I decided to update my Instagram recently found it when I was looking at my 35mm slides. It's probably my earliest large oil painting. I made it at Saci Florence with materials from zecchi.

When I look at it reminds me fondly of my time in Florence. I especially think about the people who were there in the studio. Oliver Halsman Rosenberg and Rosemarie Fiore thank you everyone for being so cool and supportive. I can't remember who else was in that painting class. Help me if you know.

Roberta Lapucci was also so knowledgeable, kind and encouraging.

Thank you everyone for the memories. I loved going to that school.

Oliver- Eye remember vividly what you were painting at the time. Do you?

Wonder if people remember this painting?

How fortunate I was to have a junior year abroad in college in 1995-96. I couldn't have done it without the generous support of my parents and family. I am so grateful for that time and all the amazing things I learned in Italy. I gained new insights into artist materials and techniques. I learned a thing or two about cooking, eating, speaking Italian, art restoration and painting. I studied at @saciflorence with @maidoffjules. And then I was eager to get back the US to finish college at the University of Utah, and start painting more seriously.

I had a semester or 2 of painting classes at the time, but I was still very inexperienced. This work is very gestural and low detail with lots of inaccuracies in the perspective and proportion. I am sure it would look very different if I could do it again today. The voice over says I was looking out the window, but I was actually standing on a rooftop terrace now that I think about it.

I don't know where this painting is, maybe in my storage somewhere. I have not seen it in over 25 years. It off its stretcher because I had to roll it up to take it home. I don't remember if I ever restretched it, I don't think I sold this one, but its lost.

Anyway so there I was studying the great Florentine masterworks first hand, taking painting classes, and buying my art supplies at the world famous @zecchicolorifirenze. What an amazing time. Follow me! @azdanfogel_art

Firenze, 2012 🇮🇹

pinto, luego existo 🙌🏼✨
