Innovation is driving change in Hawaiʻi, opening up new possibilities for the future.

Although Hawaiʻi is the most isolated population center on Earth, it is also one of the most creative places in the world. Hawaiian influence can be seen everywhere, from clothing worn across continents to global music, film, fashion, and design. Still, the origins of this influence is often overlooked. In this essay, Laʻakea Ching, a Native Hawaiian creative producer and founder of @sacred____light , explores how some of the world’s most creative nations transformed their cultural depth into global influence. They did this by investing in creative infrastructure and supporting storytellers who share their identity with the world. Japan included cultural reconstruction as a key part of its recovery after the war.

Korea made culture a national strategy and invested in it until creative exports changed how the world views the country. Talent can appear naturally, but influence must be developed. Hawaiʻi has always had talented people. Sig Zane, Rocket Ahuna, and a new generation of Hawaiian designers and storytellers are bringing this tradition to the world. What has been missing is investment in the systems, spaces, and infrastructure that help this talent grow. Now, things are finally changing, with innovation and sustainability at the heart of this progress.
