Jazz is meant to be passed on. 🎷

One of the Vacaville Jazz Society’s core missions is creating opportunities for young musicians to learn, play, perform and grow.

🎹Saturday, September 19, that mission takes center stage at the Vacaville Jazz Festival.

We’re bringing together young musicians, local high school programs and the jazz faculty of Sacramento State for A Day of Jazz — completely FREE for students.

Students can:

🎷 Hear the Sac State Jazz Faculty perform
🎺 Attend instrument masterclasses
🎶 Explore jazz improvisation
🥁 Learn alongside other young musicians
🎤 Perform as part of the festival
🥪 Enjoy a free lunch

Masterclasses include piano, drums, guitar, saxophone, trumpet and trombone.

Then beginning at 2 PM, the stage belongs to young musicians from Vanden, Dixon, Vacaville and Will C. Wood high schools, followed by the NorthBay Health Jazz Awards and the VJS All Star Jazz Band.

📅 Saturday, September 19
⏰ Beginning at 10 AM
📍 Vacaville Performing Arts Theatre
🎟️ FREE

Because the future of jazz doesn’t happen by accident. We have to give young musicians a place to play.

Save this and send to someone who may be interested!!!

So excited to share what’s happening in my 2026–27 season! Not calling these highlights because I truly believe every performance, premiere, residency, and event is a highlight, no matter the platform! My website + socials will share specifics quarterly, but here’s a little glimpse of what’s ahead!

My opera, The Cook-Off, opens the IU Jacobs School of Music season with a big and new imaginative production! Bonus for my Wheaton + Chicagoland folks: they’re taking the production on the road, with two performances this October at the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music!

One of my new favorite pieces, City of Big Shoulders, gets two more performances this season. Commissioned by the Grossman Ensemble, the work will be performed w/ IU’s New Music Ensemble, where I’ll be in residence, and at Michigan State University. The official WP video comes out later this month! I can’t wait for y’all to see and hear this piece.

My violin concerto gets its second performance at Yale w/ violinist Heather Wittels; ~Nois sax quartet will perform Game Theory through their milestone 10th-anniversary season; Nicholas Phan + Myra Huang will perform The Beautiful across the country, including the Lincoln Center; and presenters will bring many other works from my catalogue to life in lots of different places.

There’ll also be FIVE world premieres this season, including my new oratorio w/ Marcus Amaker by the Handel Choir of Baltimore + Baltimore Chamber Orchestra w/ soloists Karen Slack + Dashon Burton; a new orchestral work for the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra commemorating its 80th anniversary; and a new trio with Tsitsi Jaji for the acclaimed Trio Afori, among others!

I’ll also be making guest appearances + residencies this season, including a visiting professorship at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.

Y’all I just have to thank my manager, Owen Summers, and the rest of my team. They don’t just help make so much of this happen; they take a HUGE load off of me so I can stay creatively active while still enjoying and being present for the most important part of my life: my wife and kids. 🤎

There’s so much more, and I’m just grateful. Let’s go, 26/27!

Holy SMOKES!! What an amazing musical I got to experience at CRC! Huge shoutout to the whole cast for showing off their moves and pipes. Especially Stella! Had no idea a bassist could move and act like that! Highly recommend the Disaster! musical to see at CRC while it’s still up and running! What a night this has been…

🎶 DID YOU KNOW? — CARNEGIE HALL EDITION

🗽Sac State Choirs, as we look ahead to our Carnegie Hall project in May, here’s a little perspective on just where we are singing…

🏛️ Carnegie Hall opened in 1891—more than 135 years ago—and is considered one of the world’s most prestigious concert venues.

🎼 Tchaikovsky was there on opening night. He traveled to New York and conducted his own music during Carnegie Hall’s inaugural festival.

🎻 The New York Philharmonic called Carnegie Hall home for 70 years, from 1892 until its move to Lincoln Center in 1962.

😳 And here’s a wild one: Carnegie Hall almost disappeared. It was slated for demolition in the 1950s before violinist Isaac Stern led the campaign that ultimately saved it.

🎵 Since 1891, its stages have welcomed generations of legendary musicians and some of the most important figures in American cultural history.

And now imagine this:

Sacramento State Choirs.
On that stage.
Adding our own chapter to that history.

May 2027. New York City. Carnegie Hall.

More to come… 👀🎶

Jake Shimabukuro performs live at the Crest Theatre in downtown Sacramento on June 14th!

Jake is a world-renowned ‘ukulele virtuoso whose groundbreaking artistry has redefined the instrument for the 21st century. Hailed as the “Jimi Hendrix of the ‘ukulele,” Shimabukuro has captivated audiences across the globe with his masterful technique, innovative spirit, and deeply expressive performances that seamlessly blend elements of jazz, rock, classical, blues, folk, and traditional Hawaiian music.

For more than two decades, Jake has expanded the vocabulary of the ‘ukulele, transforming it into a vehicle for everything from intricate solo compositions to sweeping, cinematic works.

This summer, he returns to the road with Tradewinds & Rainbows, a limited West Coast run that brings together a deeply personal circle of collaborators: Henry Kapono and Pure Heart. Rooted in shared history and musical lineage, the tour brings Kapono—one of Hawai‘i’s most respected singer-songwriters—back to the stage with Shimabukuro following the duo’s warmly received 2024 performances.

It also marks a milestone for Pure Heart, the trio Shimabukuro formed in high school, which will make its first appearances outside Hawai‘i as part of the run.
