Today, my son reminded me, is the two year anniversary of releasing my big expensive magnum opus record.
I spent 7 years on it, and I don’t want to actually count it up, but north of 20k.

Nothing much came of it.
We put it out to a resounding: “cool”.
The band dissipated, life happened, I stopped pursuing opportunities, so opportunities dried up.
It is now just one more slice of data floating around Spotify that will one day disappear when I get tired of paying to host it.

Also, I don’t regret it , and I’ll probably do it again. With purer motives, a better plan and better songs, someday soon I’ll set out to make my “best” record again.

If you want to connect with something, you got to swing the bat. They aren’t all gonna be home runs, few are, but I’m proud of myself for swinging the bat as hard as I could.

I had the absolute best time spending my thirties on this record, I fully committed, I cut no corners, I made new friends and great memories with old friends, I re-tracked guitars seven times until the solution presented itself, I bitched to Rick constantly about the whole process, I accessed an entire ecosystem of A-listers and Grammy winners that I have no business being in, I developed my skills at a rapid pace, I filled my heart with inspiration and poured it all out again.
I left it all on the field.

And I was the crash test dummy for all of my future clients. With every win and loss I got sharper on behalf of every single one of you that I will come alongside. I know how to walk with you because I’ve been there.

Whatever the thing that’s in your heart is to do, please get busy doing it.
Stop listening to the inner voice of the most critical person you know, especially if it’s you.

Close your eyes and swing the bat as hard as you can. Doing so is like turning on a bug light that will attract all of the best people in the world into your life, while forming you into the best version of yourself and minimizing the odds that you end up being an old crotchety bitch.

Or you know, try to make a lot of money I guess. That seems great too.
I wouldn’t know.

I get the appeal of Suno/ AI music. I do.
The world feels like a hellscape sometimes and people need ways to express themselves to survive.
Everyone that’s ever learned an instrument or filled a notebook with lyrics should make a record, or at least one song.

Sound your barbaric yawp, and if playing the Suno video game gets you one step closer to the confidence you need to do it, great!
But do it for real, in your actual voice.
Do it with friends, and/or make some friends in the process of doing it.
Everything worth doing is worth doing poorly in real life.

The answer to mediocre s*x can’t be loneliness. The answer to lack of real friendships cannot be more time talking to Chat.

Humanity is not a problem that we need to unburden ourselves of, it’s source of all the real beauty in the world, which is always born of some kind of pain or ugliness.
Have the courage to make mediocre music.
I’ve done loads of that and it has been the best time and I have made the best friends you can imagine.
