SANKOFA’S PEN 🖊️ Fall 🍁 In-Person Gathering 2026 12 Years and Counting Saturday, October 10, 2026 Our recent Sankofa’s Pen Gathering was extra special. We had some of our traditions— visiting a Black-owned restaurant, check ins, and celebrations and photos with our books. But something was different… a surprise addition— a baby shower. We celebrated author Sadé Smith and her upcoming arrival. Sadé has been a big supporter of Sankofa’s 🖊️ Pen— showing up at book launches , creating reels and posts, cohosting a monthly live called BIG UP BOOKS , and advocating for more diverse voices. We wanted to show her our appreciation and celebration. She was surprised 😮 🎊! The event was extra special with Calgary, Alberta-based author Yewande Daniel-Ayoade who joined us after the launch of her new book DELE AND AMINATA’S JOLLOF WAR which was held at A DIFFERENT BOOKLIST. Author Delano Brown (and his wife) came after his Indigo Scarborough Town Centre book signing of his debut book MY NEIGHBORHOOD. Authors Nadia L. Hohn (STOP ANTIBLACK RACISM), Kimberly Dawkins (GRACIOUSLE IN LOVE), and Treslyn Vassell (NAHLIYA AND THE LADY author and her hubby) were in attendance. Luiza Junqueira of the CHILDREN’S BOOK BANK JANE AND FINCH also joined the festivities. It was a fun time of resource and information sharing and storytelling. What a fun event! Thank you 🙏🏾 to everyone who came to the SANKOFA’S PEN Fall In-Person Gathering. The next in-person event will be held this winter and a virtual will be held in November. As always, Black Canadian Kidlit and yalit creators are welcome, pre-published, emerging, and mid list, independent amd traditional, illustrators and authors. We welcome our allies on special occasions. 12 years and counting. What an honour and joy it was to attend the Black Lit Emancipation Book Fair, part of Canada’s FIRST Canadian Black Literary festival this past weekend!!! 🥰😀🫶🏾. What I liked most about this event was the expansive selection of Black Canadian Literature, and the knowledge, vibes, positivity interconnectedness and upliftment from everyone in the room. I met lots of new people and connected with familiar faces too! It was great to be a part of this event with all of you. Thank you everyone for a fantastic day and wishing you all joy and great success in the future. #CBLF2026 #blacklitfair #canadianblackliteraryfestival #canadianauthors . We spy with our eyes, Black Canadian Kidlit at @thekayafest Symposium in Toronto on August 21, 2026. Great to see book vendors @nilevalleybooksto / @nilevalleybooks / @nile_valley_books and Sophia Jackson of @soulfulcolour / @soulfullysophiajackson . Books by @sadesmith_author , @kendaleyart , @sayadaramdial , @arden.tart , and @rosemarysadlier were featured alongside books about or by Marcus Garvey, Rastafari, and Black liberation. The event was part of the Kaya Fest, a multi-disciplinary reggae festival held at @markhamfairground in Markham on August 22, 2026. This week I attended the 40th IBBY World Congress in Ottawa - a gathering of 350 children’s book professionals from across the globe, united by one belief: that the right story in the right hands at the right moment can change a child’s life. I came as a delegate. I left having spoken to the room. I talked about what it costs a child not to find their story in any book. About the structural barriers that keep certain voices from ever reaching the shelves. And about why every librarian, editor, publisher and illustrator in that room is doing something that matters far more than the industry gives them credit for. Child Soldier: When Boys and Girls Are Used in War exists because someone decided my story was worth telling. Ottawa-Montreal was a movie. It was an absolute honour to be present at the International Board on Books for Young People @ibby.international World Congress to deliver a keynote on the power and potential of hip-hop as a form of literacy, and to take part in a panel with my fellow esteemed kidlit authors @nadialhohn_author, @kevinheronjones, @sadesmith_author, and @wandawriting as chair. I was humbled to be introduced for my keynote by the cofounder of my legendary publisher @annick_press before speaking to an engaged crowd about one of my major passions in this life: hip-hop for education! Panel vibes were also incredible as bookish people from all over the world came to hear about Black realities in Canadian publishing from the people who truly know. There aren't that many of us, but trust there will be more and more! Many a fine dinner was had at the IBBY conference and I got to cross paths again with On the Trapline author @davidrobertsonwriter! Love this guy! Please check out his incredible work. Oh and did I mention my wonderful literary agent @carlywatters took me out for lunch as well? Wish I'd snapped a pic! Thank you, Carly! I made a quick train trip to the absolutely poppin city of Montreal on Saturday night to see my main man from time @shota_nagow. Beautiful catchup! And whose outdoor concert did we stumble upon in downtown Montreal but yxe's own @bigtones.oto and @zhethefree!! And the homies pulled me on stage for a freestyle! What is life?! @sankofaspen book signing at @indigo back in Ottawa on Sunday, and dinner before sayin what's up to the absolutely incandescent @apollothechild on Monday before I skated home. Mans is one to watch! A few bumps with the airline gettin back but we won't go there.😅 It is all gratitude from the boy. This was a big one. And I give thanks for the experience, and to all of y'all for your love and support. It's what got me here. 🙏🏾 More life.
