At CAA this week, I was delighted to present some new vibrating theories about jelly as a material we use to think about things too abstract to grasp or too in-between to classify, but I was MORE delighted to ask the incomparable @dreamcaketestkitchen to respond to those theories with a cake that I specified be “wobbly” and “almost-but-not-quite-alive.” You nailed it, Hyun Jung!!

Thanks to @shannonraestratton for forever being my party collaborator and all these brilliant people for eating cake. We asked them all for a cold read on the work and here’s what they said:

Yak
Linda Nguyen Lopez sculpture
Bouffant wig
Studio Ghibli character
Waterfall
Spaghetti-like noodle quality
From an earlier time and place
Child’s drawing of a Christmas tree
Haystack
Materials & technique approach from the art historian: meringue, frosting, someone used a pastry bag
Misshapen mountain
Something that scoots along the floor
Gorg from Fraggle Rock
Elegant Snuffleupagus
Scene from an opera
First Star Trek series

Thank you to these dear friends for spending my ideal birthday with me at @museumvillageny! We made brooms and candles and we talked about historiography and the ideological function of nostalgia. Like I said: ideal ✨

I simply gasped when our guide Cheryl told us that Monroe, NY is the birthplace of Velveeta cheese. Museum Village, please start an artist research residency so I can make a cheese history dinner for you. 🧀 🙏🏻

1) small brooms, tiny candles, deadass serious faces
2) welcome to (this imagined version of) the past!
3) demo broom from our amazing educator Cheryl
4) candle choreography
5) largest mastodon skeleton IN THE WORLD YES THAT IS CORRECT
6) 1900 drugstore mirror selfie
7) hearth for historical cooking and staff grilled cheeses
8) Velveeta plaque in Monroe (!!!)
