This week’s “Light in the Darkness” features Ayelet Cohen Wieder, a clinical psychologist and supervisor at the “SafeHeart” association, which provides professional mental health support for survivors of the music festivals on October 7th. I asked her if the work with the survivors had affected her sleep:
“During the first days of the war, the work consisted of phone calls with young people who had fled the parties and lost friends and needed to someone to talk to. We, the therapists, worked shifts around the clock. I had thirty years of experience as a trauma therapist, but never had I heard stories like these. At the end of night shifts, it would take me several hours to calm down enough to fall asleep. On the sixth day of the war, I was asked to visit a family whose son was missing - a soldier on leave, who had been at the parties. The family didn’t know if he was dead or alive. I arrived at their house, and even before I had a chance to sit down with them, there was a knock on the door - the military had come to notify them that they might have found the son’s body. It was an incredibly difficult situation, and very different from receiving patients into the safe space of my clinic, which I was accustomed to. That night I felt awful. One of the association’s founders insisted I speak with a supervisor to process what happened. It was late at night, and I wanted to go to sleep, but I had a long conversation with the supervisor, also about the worries for my son, who was a soldier in Gaza at the time. It had all become very intertwined. In the morning, I thanked the supervisor - because of that conversation, I had slept well.”
