⚡ New Music Friday: The impassioned music of Dan Cummings has always had a certain impact to it, balancing a cautious world-weariness with angry aggression. Over the past few years, the outspoken musician, union pipefitter welder, and social activist has been making a noisy racket at maximum volume with acclaimed hardcore punk band Already Dead, tackling social issues and defending the rights of the blue-collar working class. But he’s also known to strip it down and unplug when necessary.

Now the Boston songwriter, a vocal presence on the front lines of labor movements, has embarked on a solo run, and serves up a modernized cover of iconic folk-rock protest song “Which Side Are You On?,” out today on all major platforms except Spotify.

With a classic Cummings snarl, he’s swapped out his punk band’s piss n’ vinegar attack for a folk-rock stomp, weaponizing his voice and lyrically updating the message, originally written in 1931 by activist Florence Reece and popularized by Pete Seeger and The Almanac Singers years later.

Find it on Bandcamp and Apple, and watch the video on YouTube.

Please welcome Dan Cummings (@dancummingsmusic) to the Knyvet network. The Already Dead frontman launches a solo project with a modernized cover of folk-rock protest song “Which Side Are You On?,” set for release everywhere except Spotify on Friday, May 29.

The message behind the song, first written in 1931 by activist Florence Reece and later popularized by Pete Seeger and The Almanac Singers years later, is as vital today as it was nearly 100 years ago, with artists like Billy Bragg, Dropkick Murphys, Tom Morello, and others providing their interpretations.

A union pipefitter by day, Cummings is no stranger to taking a stand in his music, performing everywhere from New England bars and clubs to neighborhood protests and community gatherings like the Bread & Roses Heritage Festival. His songwriting activism has been featured in WBUR, New Noise, WGBH, Maximum Rock and Roll, and elsewhere both locally and nationally. Drop a follow and stay tuned for more.
