Went out to cover the No Kings protest in Denver on Saturday for @thecuindependent

It started out calm with a few interviews and the main walking protest which shut down roads in Denver. Towards the end, there was someone who opposed the protest and was trying to get a reaction out of the protesters. In slide 2 he brandished a knife which caused other protesters to think it was a gun. He allegedly pulled the knife and threatened another protester before this video was taken. He later said multiple times “I got a gun. I have a gun.” According to another reporter he was tackled and arrested by armed police once he was off the path of the protest.

After most of the main protests had gotten back to the capital, there was a smaller protest that started walking towards the highway. Denver police had a blockade in place and was announcing over their loudspeakers that chemical munitions would be used to block highway access. Denver police gave a 10 minute countdown to turn around and leave, the protesters did not back down. Tear gas, smoke, and pepper balls were used to corral the protesters back to the capital. Arrests were made, specifically when protesters tried to kick the smoke and/or tear gas canisters away from where they landed.

An overall great day to cover the protest with the CUI crew.

Yesterday, CU Students Demand Action, CU Team Enough, and Fairview Students Demand Action joined together to host a rally protesting recent gun violence in the United States and our communities.

We would like to thank all of those who volunteered to publicly speak on their experience. Special thanks to Silver Creek Students Demand Action, Moms Demand Action, and everyone who joined the rally in support of our cause. A special thank you to Sagan Randall from the CU Independent for the photos of our event.

This rally was a step forward in the right direction, as we continue our fight against gun violence in our communities and country as a whole.
