I left Girona with a full heart.

For two years, I did not leave the United States. I poured myself into Urban Indigenous Collective and restoring my health so I could continue this bridge work without disappearing inside it. Spain was a return deeper into my purpose.

At the World Ayahuasca Forum, I asked what a “new time of alliance” requires. Alliance is not being in the same room. Alliance is relationship, and relationships carry responsibilities. The purpose of a bridge is not to stand in the middle and charge a toll. It is to open doors, move resources, protect sovereignty, return power, and know when to get out of the way. Grandmother @monapolacca, a Hopi/Havasupai/Tewa elder and one of the International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers, who I had the honor of supporting through my work with the IMC Fund, opened us with words that reminded me why grandmother wisdom must guide what we build. I am grateful for time with Chief @yssotruka and @ednatruka, sharing water teachings and recognizing our connected cosmologies and shared kinship. A To Sandor Iron Rope, who was the catalyst to my understanding of what right relationship looks like. To @glauberloures , who shows me cosmic diplomacy. And to every Indigenous leader, relative, and comrade in this purpose work with who I deepened relationship, my heart is full. We closed our time together in radicle joy and movement through an after party stewarded by my partner, @thealbchemist , raising resources for UIC’s work with urban Indigenous people in New York City.

I keep returning to this question, how should this gathering be measured? Not by what was said on a stage in Spain, but by what changes because we met, which relationships endure, which territories are protected, which resources move, and whether Indigenous peoples gain power over the futures being built around our medicines and knowledge. I leave with gratitude, renewed responsibility, and a deeper commitment to walk together without extraction, erasure, or entitlement.

The bridge does not replace either shore. It exists so we can reach one another.

Shout out to aunty @mzmeshell4 who made my skirt!

In a new op-ed featured in @PsychedelicsToday, MAPS Co-Executive Director Ismail L. Ali examines the political and commercial interests surrounding ibogaine, as well as the responsibilities that come with it. That includes respecting Gabon’s sovereignty, protecting iboga’s ecological future, and ensuring that the communities who have stewarded its knowledge and use for generations are not pushed aside as development accelerates.

“The people whose knowledge and natural resources make a commercial product possible should participate in how that product is developed and who benefits from it. Anything short of that is plainly missing the point.” -@Sage_Izzy

The promise of ibogaine cannot be separated from the question of who holds power, whose knowledge is valued, and who ultimately benefits. Moving quickly is not the same as moving responsibly.
