Keratin - Melbourne Fringe - Rikia Bell - OPENING FRIDAY

The monstrous feminine meets a grotesque manicure.

the emergence of a creature
an abnormal growth
prior existence scratched into shreds
pushing up nail-bed and scalp
supplements of either curse or charm
without meticulous maintenance
Keratin feeds disarray
bleeding yourself into other
you may feel the asphyxiation
if not polite or palatable enough

‘Keratin’ is a live contemporary dance work that plays with polarities between seduction and repulsion, human and other. It follows the journey of a female monster who’s body has been subjected to a grotesque manicure. The subject klicks, klaws, and krashes discovering how her new form resides in this unknown space. ‘Keratin’ investigates themes of the monstrous feminine, femme fatales, body horror, queerness and the sexualisation of the female body. It challenges our patriarchal expectations surrounding power and confronts our fear of anything perceived as “other”.

🌀 Out of Bounds 2025 🌀

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Dancehouse for the sixth iteration of Out of Bounds — and to the brilliant artists, designers and facilitators who made it such a dynamic weekend of movement, ideas and exchange.

Across two days, 24 lead artists shared choreographic works-in-progress, receiving generous, considered feedback from peers and industry professionals. It was a space to test ideas, ask questions and gather as a community.

Today, we’re spotlighting the first half of this year’s artists from Day 1 of the program: Jayden Wall / Daksha Ramesh Swaminathan / Opal Russell & Amelie Logan / Caroline Meaden / Eloise Wright / Sport of Ether (Ether x Contact Sports) / Christopher Gurusamy / Rikia Bell & Sage Price / Rhys Ryan / Carmen Yih / Thomas Woodman / Alec Katsourakis / InPlay Projects

A special thank you to the Out of Bounds 2025 curators Lucy Guerin, Dr Phillip Adams, and Josh Wright.

📷 And shout out to Jeff Busby for capturing the energy and diversity of the weekend so beautifully!

Out of Bounds was originally devised by Lucy Guerin Inc and Temperance Hall, the Out of Bounds program premiered at Temperance Hall in March 2021.
