Octavia E. Butler once said, “There’s no single answer that will solve all of our future problems. There’s no magic bullet. Instead there are thousands of answers–at least. You can be one of them if you choose to be.”

this is me being my own answer. this is where i learned to trust myself. this is what protection looks like. what reclamation looks like. what forgiveness looks like. now, i breathe freely again, if not for the first time, and i am no longer afraid.

“come celebrate with me that everyday something has tried to kill me and has failed.” - Lucille Clifton

Big love to @g_eazy for giving me the opportunity to touch that stage and be a part of the tour. 🙏🏾 You didn’t have to open that door for me, so I’ll never take it for granted. Every crowd, every city, every moment was another reminder that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. From Brooklyn to bigger stages… we just getting started. 🗽🔥💯 shoutouts to the doctor who created this @sagetheracer love brother #HansumRell #GEazy #TourLife #BreakingNews #Madavenue

APPLICATIONS OPEN AUGUST 10TH!

Are you down to embark on a journey with me?

The UnGrateful Black Artist Institute is a 12-week/33 session online course I have been dreaming up both consciously and unconsciously since I decided to embody the name UnGrateful Black Artist (UGBA) myself.

—This is the institute's 2nd year!

WHAT TO EXPECT

This course explores what it means to be an UnGrateful Black Artist. Since adopting this name, I've found that many people hear "UnGrateful Black Artist"—& think "ungrateful Black person." Which—may or may not be true—regardless, this response is indicative of how Black people (particularly in this country) are seen. When we dare to demand more—a "more" that is usually aligned with verifiable evidence of our actions' positive impact on the environment around us—we are considered "ungrateful." This word is often used as a leash to keep us tame and small.

& yet we press on!

In this institute, we embrace the "ungrateful." Within these 12 weeks, I will be sharing stories from my over 15-year experience being a professional artist. I will invite friends/colleagues into conversations/panels surrounding what happened when they decided to be "ungrateful" in the face of art institutions wishing to smother their light. We will have reading and written assignments—as well as projects that touch the realms of dance, performance, and visual art. By the end of our time together: one goal is for each participant to leave more assured and confident in what they bring as an artist to this world.

Another goal: for each participant to leave with a renewed understanding of the importance of rigor, discipline, and devotion to one's craft.

APPLICATIONS OPEN AUGUST 10th!
