I’m thinking of my Native friends on this Indigenous Peoples Day, and I’m thankful for the warmth and generosity they’ve shown me this past year.

This video is from earlier this summer, when over 200 Lakota horsemen rode from Pine Ridge to the Greasy Grass to celebrate the 150th anniversary of their victory in the Battle of Little Bighorn.

We were honored to be invited to spend a couple days tagging along and camping with the Tribe in this very special place.

Thanks to our friends at @sagetosaddle, who are doing incredible work for Native youth across many reservations.

Nate spends half his time every year in South Dakota to run a horsemanship program for kids on the Pine Ridge rez. It’s a place filled with profound beauty and complicated memory and I’m changed by our visit there. We slept on the land, got to experience the extreme sport of Indian relay racing, two stepped, lost at poker and had the best time ever with @whereveruwannabe

@sagetosaddle organized a beautiful Sobriety Ride for Lakota youth out to Pine Ridge and I’m grateful that there was a horse for me to join in on the 20 mile prayer ride into the Powwow Grounds.

Grateful My friend @anpowinwhitepume didn’t break any bones when that two ton pickle 🥒 got spooked by a rogue coffee cup in the road and flipped over on top of her just outside the powwow grounds.

Thankful for the opportunity to finally ride together🙏🏼 the whole way out there was a horse with a 17 on it. A sign from my dad and a super early birthday blessing for me🎁❤️🥹 had me tearing up.

This would have been the weekend of the Women’s Reciprocity Ride but we had to reschedule it. It will happen and this was a beautiful reminder of the healing power of these rides on the riders and the community.

@sagetosaddle puts these rides on and supports lessons for youth on Pine Ridge free of charge! Please consider making a donation on the page.

Every year Lakota men and women of all ages take part in the Little Bighorn Ride from Pine Ridge to the Greasy Grass, in Montana, the site of one of their greatest victories.

This year, on the 150th anniversary of the battle of Little Bighorn, Lakota riders left Pine Ridge on June 7th, with over 200 eventually joining (and one adventurous dog).

This is the moment they rode into Crow Agency, in full-throated celebration, with the monument, last stand hill, and Battle Ridge up behind them. Powerful stuff.

@hannah_banana406 and I were honored to be invited to spend a couple days tagging along and camping with the Tribe on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation and spending time in this in very special country.

Lots of pride, love, laughter, and delicious food. And many new friends for us. Thank you for the hospitality and thanks to @sagetosaddle for the good work.
