It is very rare that I write a blog post like this. However, nobody I have ever met, is more deserving of any recognition they get than this athlete. When I entered my lone season at Russell Sage college, I had heard the hype around a fiery undersized outside hitter. A recent transfer from UAlbany, I met the athlete with a thousand nicknames and was instantly impressed.
Macey Salvione was listed at just 5 foot 3, but she played well above her height. In her senior season alone, Macey had 353 kills on the season, and hit .211 on the year. She was the Gator’s top attacker, and had one of the best cut shots I have ever seen (named the Mitchy cut, in regards to one of her nicknames). To add to this, Macey may have been one of the best from behind the line. She had 55 aces in 2024, and in 2025, she increased that number to 77. In just two seasons, Macey had reached the top 10 for Sage in career aces.
But those stats are nothing in comparison to the kind of person Macey is. As a 19 year old sophomore who had just started his coaching journey, Macey not only treated me with respect, but treated me like a friend. Macey was a leader, and has one of the highest IQ’s for the game I have ever seen. Now the Head Coach at her alum, Gloversville High, Macey continues to pass down her wealth of knowledge to the younger generations. She is also still connected to Sage, as her sister, Allie, has been a solid D.S for the Gators. Both Allie and Macey were standouts at FMCC.
But for those who may not know, Macey herself is a huge inspiration for why The D3 Diaries started. I felt as if her talent should be more well known nationally. Macey, in my humble and honest opinion, will go down as one of the most underrated talents of our sport. Her, along with Loren Hernandez at Manhattanville, proved that you don’t need to be 6 feet tall to succeed at the pins.

One position that often doesn’t get the credit it deserves is the Libero position. One of the hardest position battles year in and year out for many teams. However in the Empire8, there is no shortage of talent at the position. The Empire8 has always had solid Liberos, including the last year. However this season, the Liberos of the Empire8 are looking elite beyond elite, and 4 athletes have put their own names on watch.
Starting off with Megan Wright. A standout leader for the Utica Pioneers. She’s been on an absolute hot streak this year. Once again, Wright is near the top of the nation for digs per set, with just over 6. She leads the empire 8 in pretty much every Libero category you can think of. She set Utica’s all time dig record earlier this year. To go along with this Wright earned D3 Diaries Midseason All American honors this season. And looks to continue this.
One of the most underrated Liberos in the major hails from SUNY Geneseo. Zooey Gagnier is a firey force for the Knights. Gaginer currently has a solid 3.3 digs per set, and has recently hit the 1,000 dig mark for her career. Gagnie also has been solid in reception with a 94%.
Sophomore Emma Curry has been a gem for the Gators of Sage. The sophomore from Arizona has been the backbone of their defense these last two seasons. Boasting a 4.83 digs per set, Curry sits at 769 for her career in just 2 seasons. To add to this, she also has been one of the best servers in the nation, with 57 aces to just 19 errors. She totals 124 aces, and creeps closer to a t-10 spot at sage!
Finally, we talk about Elsie Logan of Brockport. Elsie was named a D3 Diaires Midseason All American recently, and has been proving why every game. Logan currently sits at 4.81 digs per set, and earlier this season, she as well hit the 1,000 dig mark. The Senior out of New York has also had an absolute outstanding start to conference in her serve receive, with a 98%. Logan is one of the best liberos I’ve personally ever seen in terms of her movement. And she shows that often!
The empire8 isn’t just those 4 Liberos. But regardless of the names presented, they are all forces to be reckoned with!

Paige Kemmer is having one heck of a sophomore campaign so far! In her match against Hartwick? She had 13 kills on 26 swings, hitting well over .300! She has yet to have a match where she hit under .340%, and has achieved double digit kills in all 3 matches Sage has played ! What a start as she won the Empire8 POTW award for week 1!
