1% technique. 99% seeing shapes.

That’s how John Sahag described the relationship between technical mastery and creative judgement.

Sahag was one of New York’s most influential hairstylists, developing a distinctive approach to dry cutting that challenged how hairdressers approached weight, length and the finished shape.

His work extended from editorial photography to creating Demi Moore’s celebrated haircut for Ghost.

But what interests me most isn’t the celebrity work.

It’s how years spent working in front of the camera influenced his understanding of hair.

He recognised that cutting hair wet meant anticipating how it would behave once dry.

His solution wasn’t simply to cut everything shorter.

It was to observe more closely.

Understand where the weight was sitting.

Understand what needed removing.

And, just as importantly, what needed to remain.

Technical ability is essential. But what happens when your eye becomes as developed as your hands?

John Sahag, 1952–2005.

Thank you so much @modelsdot and @iconicfocus for this interview from a few years ago ❤️❤️❤️
I was fortunate to be a model in the 90’s. Anyone from the fashion industry from that decade would understand. It was amazing. We worked a lot. Travelled a lot. Didn’t have social media or mobile phones. We had portfolios and zed cards not iPads. We did go-sees and castings . We didn’t have to self tape. We were analog not digital. We weren’t overly retouched and had to be good at what we did. I was fortunate to work with many of the fashion icons.
I am currently based in London and thrilled to be represented by @Models1. The agency that I started with when I was 17 years old. Talk about full circle! #models1 #iconicfocus …if anyone has read to the end of this, who remembers Marlowe Press who did all our “comp cards” ?? #marlowepress
