August will mark 13 years of having Type 1 Diabetes!

What started as a Pretty Little Liars watch party and a Pizza Hut date (where I licked frosting out of a container) ended with me being mercy flighted to Buffalo Children’s Hospital. I had no idea how much my life would change after my diagnosis. Carb counting before every meal, correcting after my carb counting was way off, seizures in the middle of the night before getting my Dexcom and then having to fight my insurance for 3 months and 3 seizures later to finally have them cover my sensor! 13 years later and thanks to my pump & sensor, friends and family who have been there for me since year 1, and @jack_dwaileebe for getting up at 3 am all the time to tell me my sensor is beeping urgent low (and the staff at my new doctor’s office), life is so much more manageable.

Shout out to @islettadesigns for making my Dexcom another spot to add some jewelry and not another site on me that I feel like I need to hide from everyone. Hopeful that young girls who are diagnosed with T1D will see this product and feel excited to put a Dexcom on their arm!

Also @nickjonas wrote this song about having T1D!! Fun fact we were both diagnosed at 13 years old!!

Let’s talk burnout:

This week (pictured above) tells me I need to refocus on my number 1 priority, my health. T1D burnout is uniquely insidious. It doesn’t sound dramatic-it’s often quieter, repetitive, and heavy. It’s less “I give up” and more a steady erosion of energy and care.

* “I’m tired of thinking about this every minute.”
* “I’ll deal with my blood sugar later… I just need a break.”
* “What’s the point? It’s never perfect anyway.”
* “I don’t want to check right now.”
* “I know what I should do, I just… can’t.”
* “I feel like I’m failing at this.”
* “I don’t want to explain this to anyone else today.”
* “I wish I could just be normal for one day.”

It can show up as:

* Avoiding checks, boluses, or site changes
* Letting highs/lows ride longer than usual
* Frustration at devices (alarms feeling like harassment)
* Guilt + shame loops (“I messed up” > avoid > worse numbers > more guilt)
* Mental exhaustion more than physical

What makes T1D burnout different from just a bad day is that it sticks around. It’s not one rough night-it’s the feeling that you’re always “on duty”.

So when you’re feeling burnt out:

“Adapt. React. Readapt. Apt.”

T1D x friendships 🤝

People don’t always see it-but Type 1 Diabetes is exhausting. The decisions, the calculations, the constant awareness is overwhelming.

Last night was one of those moments. I went to pick up my Omnipods from the pharmacy-out of stock. Just like that. Plan B was staring me in the face.

Instead of going back to manual injections, I called a friend… another T1D. No hesitation-he showed up with 2 pods and a simple “you good this morning?” check-in.

That’s what this is about.

Not just surviving T1D-but having people in your corner who get it without explanation.

Lessons learned:
1. Always be prepared/stockpile when you can
2. T1D can feel isolating but it doesn’t have to be

Find your people. Be someone’s person. It makes all the difference.

Type 1 Diabetes x Exercise

Exercise with T1D isn’t just physical-it’s mental toughness in action.

Some days will feel off. Numbers won’t cooperate. Energy might dip. But consistency beats perfection every time.

Move your body. Lift. Run. Walk. Train. Also having a workout partner with type 1 helps.
