In 2017, I walked away from my career, picked up a camera, and began documenting what I was seeing around me in the Bay Area. It was impossible not to confront the Black lives being taken by police—Mario Woods in San Francisco, Sahleem Tindle in Oakland, and so many others.

In 2018, I made this image in Sacramento during a protest following the killing of Stephon Clark.

This image would become the first photograph of mine to be collected. From the beginning, I knew that one day I wanted Colin Kaepernick to have this image.

Nine years after I first picked up a camera, I was fortunate enough to meet him and finally place it in his hands.

There is a lot contained in this image for me—the lives that were lost, the people who took to the streets, the years that followed, and the conviction it took for @kaepernick7 to stand for something when doing so came at a tremendous cost.

I’m grateful that, after all these years, the image finally found its way to him.

We all remember Kaep taking a knee. What I appreciated most about Saturday’s conversation with Colin Kaepernick at West Little Rock’s Saint Mark Baptist Church was hearing more about the reading, learning and questioning behind it. About consciousness, liberation, the power of athletes and individual success vs. collective action.

He’d made it. NFL quarterback. Super Bowl. Money. Fame. He could’ve said, I got mine. Instead, he asked what it would say about him if he saw injustice and did nothing.

One of my favorite parts was about joy. We can be angry about injustice without letting it steal our joy. Love each other. Support each other. Fight for each other. Find joy in community.

That’s a message I needed.

He also gave a lot of love to the friends and mentors who shaped him — including Harry Belafonte, who helped him learn to find his own answers.

Looking forward to reading The Perilous Fight. ✊🏽

How long have you been living with a warning you were never supposed to get used to? 🚨

Just because you’re still functioning doesn’t mean everything is fine. The warning light is mercy, it gives you time to address what needs attention before the breakdown.

Stop ignoring the light.

You may be hurt. You may be limping. Everyone else may have moved on. But you were not sent just to start; you were sent to FINISH. 🏃🏾‍♂️🔥

The crowd may be gone, the clock may have stopped, and nobody may be watching, but keep going. Finish what you were sent to do.

❓ What are you determined to finish, even if you have to limp across the finish line?
