Another Edinburgh #BeerwithaQueer episode 198. This was my second show. No tickets sold, so the audience ended up being 21 volunteers from @paradisegreenuk (the venue I was at). I had a wonderful chat with @saintstella and loved her show Louise: the last dance. The whole interview and all the questions from the volunteers are up on YouTube. #fringe #interview #gay #lesbian

Had a lovely day with Saint Stella in Versailles!!!
Wow! The opulence was both beautiful and heartbreaking. No one should live like that. All that wealth could have been shared. Much like how we’re living now. But I’m grateful to see it from a historical perspective.

I’ve been so lucky to have so many friends in Paris for the beginning of my trip. It’s given me a very soft and social landing.

Wow, a busy month was had at Edinburgh Fringe 🎭

We saw 42 shows… that’s 42 hours of incredible theatre… that’s almost 2 full days! Many of our top 10 are transferring to London, so be sure to check them out and see them if you haven’t yet (or watch them again!).

How many shows did you see this year? Any we missed?

There is a special joy in capturing a portrait of performing artist. This Edinburgh Festival Fringe I was very honoured to meet Stella Kulagowski, who under her stage name @saintstella is a Toronto-based performer, producer, and multidisciplinary theatre artist working across dance, burlesque, and theatre. She came to Edinburgh with her one woman play ‘Louise: The Last Dance’ about La Goulue, a young woman who in Fin de Siecle Paris invented the cancan at Le Moulin Rouge and was a muse to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. I got a chance to see the play with my mum (who is a retired professional dancer and choreographer) who was very impressed. And let me tell you, it is not easy to impress my mum! In this darkened room and just a chair, Stella transforms into Louise and takes us on this exceptional life journey; I welled up at the end.
When we met back at the studio in Leith on one free afternoon Stella had available in Edinburgh the goal was to show more Stella, rather than Louise. I was interested in a contemporary woman who takes on a historical figure while still keeping her relevant more than 100 years later. I also wanted to experiment with movement, having such an agile subject in front of the lens. Here is the first part of our photoshoot while I’m waiting for the scans of the negative films.

We are shooting for the stars with Joan’s guest on Aug 18, as multidisciplinary theatre artist and burlesque dancer @saintstella joins Joan Q to talk strange tales & her inspiration for bringing cancan legend Louise Weber’s story to the @edfringe stage!

And of course, Joan will bring out her second sight utensils as we seek to commune with Louise “La Goulue” herself!

Don’t miss the penultimate evening with Joan at @thefreefringe at @outhouse_bar!

And definitely don’t miss Saint Stella as Louise at @greensidevenues !!!

See you Tuesday night!
