Doing the right thing is easy when everyone else does. But what about when they don’t?

I approached Salam because he looked like he could hold a good conversation. I was right.

Within a few moments, I learned how much morality matters to him. His family hails from Nigeria, and his parents raised him with a strong sense of right and wrong. Alongside his religion and culture, that upbringing shaped how he sees people—and how different the world could look if morality guided more of society’s decisions.

He expects the best out of people. But regardless of what others choose, he’s determined to be the bigger person.

That’s what stayed with me. Someone else’s behavior doesn’t have to decide yours.

Salam, thank you for putting up with that unexpectedly hot October sun a little longer so we could share a genuine human connection. These conversations are why I love photographing strangers.

What’s a lesson from your upbringing that still guides you today?

In case you didn’t know, I have an ongoing Stranger Portraits series. Make sure to follow along to see the various types of the people I meet around my city 📸
