Mr. Kevin Garst and Michael Crawley are named as the faculty and student recipients of the August 2026 Buriak Award. Mr. Kevin Garst has dedicated his life to Salem High School. He was a player on the 1994 state championship Men’s Basketball Team and went on to graduate from Salem High School. He returned to SHS to teach business and coach. He coached the SHS Men’s Basketball Team for 20 years before retiring earlier this year. As a coach, he also won a state title in 2013. Mr. Garst is a selfless and kind leader who not only wins games and championships but develops young men into leaders. Salem High School is endlessly grateful for the dedication and leadership of Mr. Kevin Garst. Senior Michael Crawley is an impressive young man who exemplifies everything a Spartan should be. He is a 3 sport varsity athlete playing football, basketball, and lacrosse. Michael takes an advanced course load and is a member of the National Honor Society. For his senior year, he has been selected to lead his fellow students as a member of the Spartan 7. Michael has a level of character rarely seen in one his age. For those who are unfamiliar, Jimmy Buriak was a 2008 Salem High School graduate who went on to give the ultimate sacrifice in a training mission off the coast of California when his helicopter went down. Established in August of 2024, the Buriak Award recognizes 1 faculty member and 1 student that leads as selflessly as Jimmy.
