IF YOU’RE A GIVER, REMEMBER TO LEARN YOUR LIMITS

For most of my life, I was the giver. I poured myself into others—always putting their needs ahead of my own. I thought that’s what love, loyalty, or even strength meant. But over time, I realized I was running on empty. I had been so focused on caring for everyone else that I forgot to care for me.

Looking back, I ask myself: Where did I learn that? Where did I learn that my needs didn’t matter as much?

But here’s the truth I’ve come to realize: my needs are just as important as anyone else’s. And so are yours.

Being generous, kind, and supportive is a beautiful quality—but without limits, it can drain us dry. The reality is, not everyone has boundaries when it comes to taking. If we don’t learn to set them, we risk losing ourselves in the process.

Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential. Eat when you need to eat. Rest when your body asks for it. Reach out to friends who make you feel seen. Do the things that bring you joy, not just the things that keep others comfortable.

Because here’s the thing: you can’t keep pouring from an empty cup. Boundaries aren’t walls—they’re bridges to healthier connections, where giving and receiving can flow both ways.

So if you’re a giver, remember: learn your limits. Protect your energy. Fill your cup. The world needs you, but it also needs you well.

🎶 “He said I’ll pay you for your time…”
That line from the song “The Dollar” by Jamey Johnson never fails to stop me in my tracks.

It’s a little boy who empties out his piggy bank, thinking maybe if he gives his dad a dollar, he’ll get some of his time.
Not toys.
Not gadgets.
Just… time.

And isn’t that the truth?
Kids don’t need perfect parents. They don’t need big vacations, designer clothes, or packed schedules.
They need us—present, connected, and engaged.

But in this world of deadlines, double shifts, and being constantly on call, it’s easy to forget that what means the most to them is often what we overlook:

✨ Sitting on the porch together.
✨ Saying “yes” to that bedtime story.
✨ Asking how their day was—and really listening.
✨ Looking them in the eye and letting them feel seen.

We chase success thinking we’re doing it for them—but sometimes we miss what they’re really asking for:
Our time, our attention, our presence.

If a child ever thinks they have to buy our time, it’s time to reset.

Today, slow down. Look around.
Because you’ll never regret the money you didn’t make.
But you might regret the moments you didn’t take.
This is one of my favorite photos of my daughter Monique fishing in Arkansas.

I love this analogy:

You are holding a cup of coffee when someone comes along and bumps into you or shakes your arm, making you spill your coffee everywhere.

Why did you spill the coffee?

"Because someone bumped into me!!!"

Wrong answer.

You spilled the coffee because there was coffee in your cup.

Had there been tea in the cup, you would have spilled tea.

*Whatever is inside the cup is what will spill out.*

Therefore, when life comes along and shakes you (which WILL happen), whatever is inside you will come out. It's easy to fake it, until you get rattled.

*So we have to ask ourselves... “what's in my cup?"*

When life gets tough, what spills over?

Joy, gratefulness, peace and humility?

Anger, bitterness, harsh words and reactions?

Life provides the cup, YOU choose how to fill it.

Today let's work towards filling our cups with gratitude, forgiveness, joy, words of affirmation; and kindness, gentleness and love for others.

(Shared from a friend whose cup is full of goodness and inspiration.)
