I dreamt often of this moment, sitting with women in my life who have supported me greatly since I birthed Dash. To be witnessed in one year of motherhood, and grief.

In many cultures around the world, it is customary that a closing ceremony is held at one year of mothering, as well as when a baby passes to honour this period, and to witness your baby as an ancestor, and I felt called deeply to hold this space for Dash and myself.

What transpired this day was nothing short of perfect, and although I had dreamt it many times, I don’t think I could have pictured it any more magic and beautiful than it came to be. The way it healed parts of me that I thought gone forever. To be held in sacred ceremony and circle by women is a gift I will never take for granted.

There were so many beautiful aspects to this ceremony, that were crafted based on my vision and what was coming forward for me a year into being a Mother of an Angel.

Maybe I’ll share more on this one day, but for now, these are the tender snippets I am willing to share. What I will say is that we all deserve to be held and witnessed in this way and be able to speak to our ancestors, to be able to identify a culture of grief within our community and feel profoundly held and loved through our most lonely times.

Creating and holding ceremonies for these rites of passage is an important part of life. Allowing space for these stories and journeys to be seen with reverence, even if confronted. We will all know the intimacy of grief well, whether we want to or not.

This was a closing ceremony, and an opening too, a blessing for fertility, to thank Dash as a wise ancestor, and an honoring of my journey as a mother.

It is pregnancy and infant loss awareness month, and I can only hope and pray that more mothers and families are held in this sacred way after loss. Whatever it may look like for them. If you know someone who has lost a child, please send them some love, not just this month but always. We never stop thinking about our spirit children, and it’s nice to know others are thinking of them too 🤍🌀

Thank you thank you thank you, to all who have held and witnessed this year with me.
