Snaps from the Roots Picnic weekend.

An outstanding weekend celebrating the strength of Hip Hop Soul. Like a Wireless Festival for the 90s kids!

Nas & Roots combo was powerful, timeless classics given an electric atmosphere thanks to the impeccable live band performance. The visuals were a creative history lesson into the vintage years of Hip Hop.

Credit to Black Thought for athletic stamina, rhyming intensely non stop!

Floetry were fantastic, reminding us of their brilliant stage presence and operatic vocals. Say Yes was a special moment with Robert Glasper playing piano.

Common also did plenty appearances throughout, including a dope tribute to J Dilla inspired by the reflective Pete Rock T.R.O.Y - and a big buzz when he performed with Floetry, but only after repeating the song due to a broken mic!

Robert Glasper's own set was compelling with the passionate piano keys. Graced by Common & Bilal throughout. A big commendation to Sasha Keable for her set with the new generation of soul music coming through with her emotive song Act Right.

Got to see Musiq Soulchild, Sa Roc, Rapsody, Benny the Butcher & Erykah Badu passed by also. And salutes to all the great people I saw at the festival.

What started off as meeting @thakrar_avani for a drink led to a lovely rustic mix of people pulling up - so we left our table of 2 at [insert venue] and waddled over to @grapeskindubai

Honestly for me it feels weird to just to jam with a single table worth of friends and not organise a huge gathering featuring everyone in Dubai. This was nice and I feel like I’m better for it.

That said…

Pitched my upcoming book to @alexchristophe who’s seen the work we do and agrees this book is going to be the ONE.

And had my annual 11 mins with @kanikachughes whose catch ups always have me cancelling my Netflix.

In December I’d like to see as many of you as possible, as I’ll be at @soledxb - this event is so good I have literally seen people move to Dubai after attending, so maybe let’s plan to hang out there?

Performing will be @tyla @miguel @kaytranada and more and so DM me if you’re confirmed to be there.

I just turned 45 🎂. Full of emotions and jet lag. I just received these wonderful photos from @cjay_davz and the incredible team at @filmswitchdubai - thank you for this beautiful gift - they capture the essence of OnlyJams perfectly.

Speaking of OnlyJams - my early Birthday party in Dubai 10 days ago - what an honour to celebrate it with our incredible hosts @amongstfew cafe - they’ve never had someone do this in their (damn near sacred) cultural hub and we’re very honoured to be first. Thank you for all your support.

And ofc @vikmorjaria for DJing 80% of the jam event and doing a great job. The muscle memory was there especially when the assignment was classics only. It was great to bring back that #lovesoul flavour and DJ as a duo again.

Special thanks to @clfrostylevergara and @hiphopcardio for coming through and bringing that b-boy energy and @andsomskin for the care package of skin care - super generous of you.

Dubai - you never let me down. This felt like @myfriendsyourfriends mashed up with a classic lovesoul DJ’s party and everyone showed up with a tonne of positive energy. If you came to the event or have ever supported me in ANY way I salute you and am forever grateful.

And finally, rest in peace to the Queen of Dubai hip hop @djpatchoulee - we are part of the same fraternity and to have her ascend so close to this event has been painful. Rest in eternal power and my condolences to her friends and family. She contributed massively to the Dubai true school music scene and every song which we call “real music” honours her and her legacy.

These are the wonderful people that took time out of their Sunday to come and say Hi a few days ago in Dubai.

Sadly IG caps number of photo tags so I couldn’t tag everyone but you are appreciated ❤️- your time, travel and effort was super meaningful and I’m glad I got a chance to chat and hug it up with each of you.

Extra special thanks to the service team and chefs @onelifedxb for their exceptional food and hospitality. Founders @cashieroftheyear x @chefkelvinkelly have done a really good job with the culture there.

For example, asa I walked in, a team member was there opening the door with a hug and said “man I still remember your birthday party here, it was the greatest night ever”, to which I said “thanks man, you know I gotta come back to One Life, it feels like home” to which he said with no hesitation “it IS home, you are welcome” - you can’t teach that, you can only nurture it. Well done team ❤️

My rhythm with Dubai is evolving. The song remains catchy, but the BPM is a little slower and that means I’m available a little less, but in a more concentrated way. This makes the meet ups and meetings a little more rare and focused, but still very much there. I love and appreciate everyone in the city and adore the city itself.

Onwards and upwards ❤️
