Before choosing the tone, read the depth.

HUE asks: which colour family? VALUE asks: how light or dark?

In the salon, the level system helps us organise depth — from dark to light.

Our Colour Mentoring map adds a visual connection: violet alongside level 3, red alongside level 5, yellow alongside level 9.

These associations help you explore how different hues contribute to the visual weight of colour. They are a teaching reference, not natural underlying pigment or fixed rules about where a hue belongs.

A violet can be pale. A red can be deep. The hue remains recognisable while its value changes.

Assess the depth. Identify the tone. Then build the formula.

On September 28th, I had the pleasure of teaching The Texture Lab, a hands-on masterclass in collaboration with @davines and @auradistribution hosted at the beautiful @salonpuremtl

Two oranges. Different dominant primaries.

YYR is yellow-led orange. RRY is red-led orange.

Hue identifies the colour family. Our RYB teaching codes help you read the primary colours behind it: the repeated letter shows which primary dominates.

Across the circle, identify the warm and cool directions. Then look closer: which primary leads the hue you see?

That understanding sharpens your colour decisions behind the chair.
