To every filmmaker, speaker and guest who made the first-ever @alzafestival feel like home: we felt it too.

We spend months designing how guests should feel, but the best part of designing an experience is the people who bring it to life.

You made the first one unforgettable, and you reminded us why we do this. Thank you.

Depending on who you ask, Hollywood is either “so over” or “so back.”

I opened the Burbank Tech Talks panel at Tailored Space last week for #latechweek by saying it’s both.

We can make and see more than ever, while people get laid off and studios merge. It feels like a metamorphosis, everything falling apart and coming together at once.

I’ve had my own version of that.

A year ago, I sat in that same room at a Tech Week event thinking, “it would be so cool to work here.” And, “so cool to moderate this.”

I ended up working there for a few months. A lot of what I’m building in Burbank started that night.

This year, I co-hosted the event and moderated the panel.

Up there with @salpaskowitz of @superpunchystudios, @jejosleeper of @methefamilypetcomic, and Dan Duran of RED, one question kept coming back: where does human craft shine right now?

Human chemistry and world building across formats came up a lot. There’s something almost defiant about choosing the best camera when you could shoot on anything. Knowing where tools help, and where they get in the way, is its own craft now.

But honestly, the room was my favorite part.

Co-hosting, I saw up close who showed up. So many people introduced themselves as “media and tech,” not one or the other. Neal (@kabloom) and I both noticed this uptick in association over the past year, but it was especially noticeable at the event.

Tech can support a vision, but the spark comes from meeting your people in person, locally. Burbank’s creative and storytelling talent is still so untapped. You drive around and it looks like your favorite show. Getting those people in a room and emboldening them is a fire starter.

It’s why I’m building NextFrame the way I am. As Sal put it, every person is their own mini studio now. Fewer middlemen, more real connection. More indie studio than big machine.

This kicks off a year of in-person rooms for me. So much more to say, but these are the highlights.

Thank you Sal, JeJo and Dan for the candor, and Neal (Rising Tide Partners), Burbank Tech Talks of @burbankca and @tailoredspacecowork for the room.

Building at this intersection? I’d love to hear what you’re making. 🎬

Director: @salpaskowitz

I'm not going to lie, I've been in a bit of a vertical rut lately. Nothing has really been giving me that excitement I used to get when I first started watching verticals. But The Layover brought back that old-school vertical feeling I've been missing, with the added charm of a '90s rom-com!

The humor, the awkward flirting, the natural chemistry, and characters you can't help but root for... THIS is the kind of storytelling I've been craving!

@sammyerson and @nicolemattox_ were such a fun pairing, and I laughed way more than I ever expected to. It was refreshing to watch something that didn't feel like it was trying too hard. It was just genuinely entertaining.

Sometimes you don't realize how much you've been missing a certain feeling until something brings it back. And for me, The Layover did exactly that. ❤️

Five stars and a much-needed reminder of why I fell in love with verticals in the first place. ✨
