The @konpakulture team spent half the prep time dancing🤣🤣... There's something contagious about those "Gouyad" sections 🤌🏾

🌊 THE WINE THAT STARTED IT ALL: GOUYAD 🌊
Ever watched a kompa dancer and wondered how the hips move like water? That's gouyad (Haitian Creole for the fluid, circular waist and hip motion), the heartbeat of kompa. 🔥

✨ Where it comes from: The rolling pelvic movements and body isolations trace back to West and Central African dance traditions, carried through generations of Afro-Caribbean folk movement, including Haitian cultural expressions.

🎶 How it met kompa: When compas music emerged in Haiti in the 1950s, growing out of méringue and blending with local percussion like the tanbou, partner dancing picked up these rhythmic waist movements to match the syncopated bass and drums.

💃 Why it's not "just wining": Gouyad takes core control, musicality and a close, communicative connection with your partner. It's a conversation, not a move.

🌍 And in 2025, UNESCO inscribed Haiti's Compas on its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Kompa is culture, history and joy in one groove.

Want to feel it in your own body? Join us at Kompa Sundowners on Sunday 4 October at Golden Palm Boutique Hotel, Mt Pleasant. Kompa lessons start at 3PM with Rico & Shingi, and DJ Biskit takes over the social from 5PM. 🌅
