Todays drive was a 2011 Mustang 3.6l convertible. Driving this car fairly quickly after the GT allowed me to compare and contrast two of what appear to be the same car. In a way, they are the same car. In lots of ways, they aren’t.

Firstly, the performance. THE V6 MUSTANG IS NOT A SLOW CAR. It just simply isn’t in the same league as the V8 present in the GT. The 3.6l revs freely and has a very linear power curve, making some decent growling sounds along the way. Power is more than enough for most people, but those looking for a muscle car experience should look elsewhere. The V8 dominates the experience in the GT, and the V6 just feels like another piece of the puzzle in this car.

The Mustang still corners alright however, with lots of predictable rotation and a fairly stable front end. Turn in is actually better than the V8. Probably due to a lack of weight over the front wheels. Steering is quick and light, but fairly accurate. Brakes are meh. It certainly isn’t agile, but it can deal with a little spirited driving.

Looks are typical Mustang, which is to say manly and handsome. The appeal of these cars is often centered around how they look, and they did a damn good job with the Mustang this time. Front end is aggressive and muscular, with clean lines and a retro style rear end treatment. Interior is much of the same, however quality is severely lacking. Lots of cheap plastics and poorly constructed equipment.

Other points of note include the ride quality, which is actually much smoother than one would expect with a sports coupe. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the noise insulation, which was substantially lacking. Lots of wind noise, although this could be due to this specific example having a decomposing cloth roof.

Overall, it’s not bad. I would even say it’s decent. Looks good, has enough power for daily driving, and gives a better experience than a Camry or Corolla. Give me the V8.
