And that’s a wrap for mini season 2026! Several members of the Kyalami family are eating good this week. 🦞 😋

We were blessed with outstanding conditions for both days – up to 80 feet of visibility, 83° water, moderate current and flat calm sees made for an enjoyable hunt. Shout out to Sam @sam3nos for snagging a 3 pounder, one of the biggest we’ve seen in awhile! You know it’s a keeper when you can’t fit it into the opening of your lobster bag. 🤣

Opening day for the season is next Thursday August 6th - come join in the fun!

Please help us welcome our next SFUPS in-person meeting presenter, Johnny Matthew’s @seek_the_deep presenting on “Finding Creativity Beneath The Surface”.

Underwater photography often rewards perfect moments. Great visibility, ideal light, cooperating subjects, and calm seas. But when you spend years shooting underwater almost daily, you quickly realize those moments are few and far between. When the ocean does cooperate, it becomes easy to fall into shooting the same images over and over again because your go to settings work. So why stray from them?

In this presentation, underwater photographer Johnny Matthews shares how experimenting with imperfect conditions, lens filters, long exposures, portraiture, and creative lighting helped him break away from repetitive underwater imagery and start seeing the ocean differently. Through both creative concepts and technical breakdowns, this presentation explores how pushing beyond standard approaches can help keep underwater photography fresh, evolving, and inspiring.

Johnny is a full-time dive professional, PADI Course Director, technical diving instructor, production videographer, and underwater photographer based in South Florida. Having worked throughout Hawaii, Honduras, Mexico, and Florida, Johnny has spent over a decade shooting underwater almost daily while working as a photo guide and dive professional. His work is shaped by shaped by real-world conditions, constant time in the water, and a passion for pushing beyond traditional underwater imagery.

Join us for a fun evening with Johnny discussing his gorgeous photo techniques! Happy Hour starts at 6pm with our meeting beginning promptly at 7pm.

Please help us welcome our next SFUPS Virtual meeting presenter, Steve Haddock @shd.haddock , presenting on “The Radiant Sea”.

Steven Haddock studies marine diversity, molecular biology, and bioluminescence at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and UC Santa Cruz. He specializes in fragile gelatinous animals that are abundant in the deep-sea and open ocean. During his research expeditions, he uses scuba diving and submersibles to study the interactions between animals and has documented many bioluminescent species and behaviors for the first time. He uses genetic methods to reveal the relationships between organisms and to understand the proteins and chemicals that they use to make their own light. He also runs the Bioluminescence Web Page (biolum.eemb.ucsb.edu), the citizen-science project jellywatch.org, and teaches computing to scientists at practicalcomputing.org. His work has appeared frequently in the New York Times, National Geographic, and on the BBC. Most recently he has published a book of photos and essays called The Radiant Sea.

Our meeting this month will detail his new book The Radiant Sea, which shows undersea life in a way that is rarely seen. With 200 photographs in five sections, it reveals the ways that animals exhibit transparency, pigmentation, iridescence, bioluminescence, and fluorescence. Captions and introductory essays show the science behind these dazzling phenomena, with most of the revelations based on the authors’ own research and photography. In this presentation, marine biologist and photographer Steven Haddock will take you behind the scenes of how the book came to be. Videos, and animations will bring the book’s photographs to life.

Join us for an and informative evening with Steve discussing these beautiful open water creatures! Our Zoom login begins at 6:45 and the meeting begins promptly at 7pm.

Please help us welcome our next SFUPS In-Person meeting presenter, Matthew Sullivan @formerlyhomelessphotographer , presenting on “Magic in the Muck”

There is a reason Lembeh Strait is regarded as the best muck diving destination on earth. Everywhere you turn there is a world-class or bucket list critter. Matthew showcases some of these incredible species and provides some tips and tricks on maximizing your photographic time in this remarkable little corner of Indonesia.

Matthew is an underwater and wildlife photographer based in South Florida, USA. Underwater photography is his greatest passion. He aims to create compelling images that can help inspire people towards caring for and appreciating our natural world and all the fantastic creatures we are lucky enough to share space with. Weird, and unusual marine critters are his favorite photo subjects. Matthew has been the recipient of awards including Nature Photographer of the Year (runner up) and most recently first place in the Ocean Portfolio category of the 2025 Ocean Photographer of the Year Awards. His portfolio demonstrates his aptitude and love for portraiture underwater.

“Underwater, I think a portrait is the best way to connect people with whatever your subject happens to be, especially if you have something that has big eyes or you can get double eye contact with or make something that’s not very charismatic in person feel charismatic to the viewer. I like capturing the details and features of faces. You can then layer in other photographic techniques to the pictures to make them more interesting.”

Together with Alex Mustard, Matthew hosts The Underwater Photography Show on YouTube @theuwps - an invaluable guide for underwater photographers. He is also a photo editor for @divephotoguide

Join us for a fun evening with Matthew! Happy hour begins at 6pm and the meeting begins promptly at 7pm.

Please help us welcome our next SFUPS Zoom meeting presenter, Isabella “Bella” Zandona @divingwithbella presenting to us on diving and preparation in Antarctica!

Isabella Zandona is a 24 year old marine biologist and underwater photographer based in Seattle. Originally from São Paulo, Brazil, she dives locally in the Pacific Northwest and internationally, working in cold, warm, and polar environments. Her photography focuses on behavior, detail, and storytelling.
After receiving a grant through Blue Green Expeditions, she spent January diving in Antarctica, where she documented both wildlife and the realities of working in one of the most extreme environments on Earth.

Bella’s presentation will explore what it takes to photograph underwater in Antarctica, one of the most extreme environments on Earth. Through a series of field stories, Isabella Zandona breaks down the realities behind the images, from gear preparation and failure points to decision-making under pressure and ethical challenges in wildlife encounters. While set in Antarctica, the lessons apply directly to underwater photographers and divers working in any environment, where preparation, awareness, and restraint often matter more than the shot itself.

Join us for a fun and informative evening with Bella as we hear more about her time in Antarctica and the realities of diving in extreme environments. Please log in early if possible as the meeting begins promptly at 7:00pm.

Please help us welcome our next SFUPS In-Person meeting presenter, Kaitlyn McQueeney @sharkdiver_kaitlyn presenting to us on Florida Shark Photography!

Kaitlyn visited Cape Cod often while in her childhood, enjoying beach days with her family. She later became fascinated with sharks when the local great white population began making headlines. She then began to study sharks more, watching documentaries, reading and researching as many books as she could find on these beautiful animals.

As many of us have done, she began her photography journey with an Olympus TG4 compact camera and housing to take photos while fun diving. She later became a Divemaster that year where guests began asking for her photos as memories of their trips. She then began working on liveaboards in the Bahamas as a Divemaster and shop photographer, creating photo packages for each weeklong charter she had.

She now focuses on her photography of the sharks, mainly out of Jupiter, Florida. She also has interests and has contributed to non-profits for research such as Manta Pacific Research Foundation, Marine Megafauna Foundation, Hawaii Unchartered Research Collective and Shark Tagger Hawaii.

Join us for a fun evening with Kaitlyn as we hear more about ethical shark photography! Happy hour begins at 6pm and the meeting begins promptly at 6:45pm.
