This has been the most intense, strange and ultimately rewarding semester in my career so far. Across my two courses, Modern and Contemporary Landscape Architecture and The Unruly City (year nine), there has been a palpable drive to render the very medium of studying together as much of the subject of the syllabi as the larger conceptual frames. All abstractions have met their proving grounds in material forms encountered in the field, and all material forms have been interrogated with sharp use of ideas (not for their own sake). History is an active construct in these courses, not a set of stale facts. Many guests have challenged and illuminated us with St. Louis as the great, messy case study. Most importantly, though, I have felt part of two real communities of people whose interests transcend credentialing and root in actual care for each other. We have reminded each other that one of the roots of the word "study" (in 12C Latin) means "to strive toward, devote oneself to, cultivate." We are here to transform ourselves not purely to construct individual gains but to realize shared aspirations. Wherever I end up in the fall, I will be so much better as a teacher because of what has happened in the spring of 2024, and who it happened with.
