Earlier this month I had an amazing opportunity to attend a workshop by @emmett_sparling in Vancouver. It was an incredible few days of learning and hanging out with an awesome crew of creatives. Here’s a few favourite snaps of @sam_nyland on Bowen Island 🍁📸🇨🇦

This one feels a little softer and a little stranger in the best way. the flower was such a small detail, but somehow it changed the whole frame for me. i love when something simple makes a portrait feel less like a pose and more like a scene. the light was strong, her expression was quiet, and everything just came together in a way i probably couldn’t recreate exactly again. those are usually the photos i end up liking the most. #sonyrx10v #portraits

@sam_nyland eyes reminded me of @aishwaryaraibachchan_arb's eye color <3
i grew up watching @bollywood , and her eyes were always one of those things everyone noticed. that grey-green-bluish colour felt so unusual, especially growing up in south asian families where darker eyes are much more common.
i think that’s why so many of us were obsessed with her eyes. they looked different, almost unreal on screen.
when i photographed sam, i got that same feeling again. not because they look exactly the same, but because that light eye colour just pulls you in.
and now i really want to see sam in a full indian/pakistani look someday :) saree, salwar kameez, lehenga and jewellery, the whole thing. i would absolutely love to photograph that.
maybe this is just my childhood Bollywood brain talking 😂

The stunning @sam_nyland, shot off the coast of British Columbia during a photography workshop I took a few weekends ago with @emmett_sparling!

Thank you both for being the lovely people you are, for the knowledge you shared, and for making my intro to photographing people feel a little less intimidating! A huge thanks as well to the family and the whole rest of the team who made the weekend as epic as it was! It truly was an incredible few days full of learning, lightbulb moments, and new friendships. 📸✨

Lately, I’ve been wanting to be more intentional with sharpening my technical skills in photography. It’s one thing to understand composition and “have a good eye.” It’s an entirely different thing to manually operate a professional camera with competence.

With that mind, this past Labor Day weekend I dipped my toes into the deep-end by participating in a 3-day camera workshop in Vancouver, Canada with the IYKYK legendary wunderkind travel and documentary photographer Emmett Sparling. It began with a short day in the studio discussing process and was followed by a long shoot day in Stanley Park and Bowen Island where Emmett grew up and his extended family still live.

In fact, the whole team running the workshop were either close friends or direct family members including Mother Tiffanee and Grandpa Tim. His lovely girlfriend Sam Nyland pictured here was our talent/model. Together, Emmett and his team made the 20 visiting photographers from around the globe feel very relaxed and at home, as if we were all part of the family as well.

Day-3 was an instructor-led demonstration of post-processing and how to keep your images real, yet make them sing. This image gallery contains my homework, a few selects that provide a small taste of the experience. There’s so much more but I chose for this post mostly environmental portraits as this is what I was most interested in honing—shooting people on your own outdoors in changing natural light conditions. These images were shot on a Sony Alpha a7rIII with a 24-70mm lens and processed in Lightroom, no Photoshop.

I want to thank Emmett, Sam, Carleigh, Keoni, Tiffanee, Tim and the entire motley crew of creative misfit shutterbugs who made this such a fun and educational weekend. Wherever you are on your journey, keep going. I’m looking forward to whatever comes next myself. If you actually read this far, I’d love to know what you think of the images. Flatter me here haha or dm me with ego destroying technical reviews. Some of my editing is still on the heavy handed side I know. Last but not least, if you’re someone who is interested in creating some images together, hit me up.
