I struggled for a long time to work out what I wanted to do. It wasn’t until a few years back that I decided to shift focus and stop spending time on the ‘what’, and instead figure out who I wanted to be in life.

This repositioning added a lot more clarity about the direction I wanted to move in, but the knowledge alone wasn’t enough. I knew that there was a lot of work I had to put in to move forward. For me, this meant having really in-depth conversations about issues that mattered like the deep-seated sexism, systemic racism, segregation in our societies, and reflecting on the role I could play in creating change.

It was during this process that my partner and I came up with the idea of starting @sama_apparel. We went through an unfortunate experience which caused us a lot of trauma. It’s also what reinforced to us the importance of reaching out to people, spreading messages of love, and empowering others.

We felt we’d have the greatest impact in achieving this mission through clothing. Clothes allow the wearer to have freedom of expression and make a statement. We wanted to create designs with messages that started conversations and enabled people to feel empowered.

The catch however was that neither of us had a background in fashion or knew the first thing about running a business. So we turned to Youtube to learn everything from production and setting up an e-commerce store, to creating and executing marketing campaigns. Needless to say we encountered a few hurdles at the start, but we were determined to see each set back as an opportunity to learn. Since our inception, we’ve built a really engaged community with people who wholeheartedly support our mission. What I love most about our business is that everything we’ve built is self-taught and a result of the support from our community and peers.

This journey has truly been an eye-opening experience. It’s helped me realise the need to unlearn and relearn what I knew as right and wrong. It’s also what keeps me motivated to find new ways to become a better ally and a better person.
